I noticed that there are some slabbed quarters (PCGS) with flags and some without flags. what is the story on these? Same coins - only different packaging?

I think they are just decoration, I know what you are talking about though. I saw that there were a few PCGS coins on Coin Vault and they made no deal about the diffrence, and they like to make a big deal out of everything.

So, nothing special, just another new "sticker". Thanks.

Originally it was just another special favor for a big time dealer for a big payment. But when it turned out to be popular in the marketplace they then made it available to anyone sending in a bulk submission of state quarters. I just consider it to be a novelty slab and not a regular production slab.

I noticed your "Slab collector and researcher
    reported as of 9/22/02
    79 companies 215 production varieties"
Okay, I give up, what does it mean?

It means just what it says - he collects the slabs themselves, not the coins in them. And he is also the author of the only book there is written on the subject - Third Party Grading / Certification Services & Slab / Certificate Varieties

Geez. 79 companies? I should buy stock in plastic and sticker producers.

79 Companies! I agree, a lot of plastics died for those slabs!

JMO but this series has to be so heavily hoarded, I just can't see any real longtime collectibility beyond just for fun. I am glad it has gotten more people interested in coins, but I just think these are being saved by the truckload.

The sig file is out of date, and in fact hasn't been updated since before the book came out (I didn't come over here much until I got banned ATS). When the book came out the final count was 82 companies, 221 production varieties. Currently the count is in the 130 company, 335 production slab varieties range.
