I'm on a silver hunt at the moment. Buying up junk silver (under melt.. well trying too anyways) and roll hunting for it.

found a few in nickels but nothing great.. dimes and quarters seem to be the best bet. Everyone hunts half dollars and large dollars. It's like people playing the lotto if its only over 200million.. 1.5million is still alot of money :p hunt the smaller coins!

Varieties and key dates have worn me out lol

I now do most of my buying from internet dealers -- with no regrets. I also visit antique shops on a pretty regular basis. Mostly I find overpriced low quality stuff, but an occasional good buy.

Regarding the collection/accumulation question, organization turns an accumulation into a collection.

You could check estate auctions for coins, but watch for "auction fever". Some people bid outrageous amounts for coins they think are "rare". Flea markets are another possibility.

Coin roll hunting is a good way to go. If your not having luck finding silver, how about trying to put together sets from circulation? I have alot of fun trying to put together multiple sets of Jeffersons from circulation and rolls.
Anyway, how far away are you from shows? I do virtually all my buying at shows which I travel about a hundred miles to get to 3 or 4 times a year and its well worth it.

pittsburgh would be my closest show to go to ..i think that they are having one at the beginning of may according to the expo web site..now i never did give much thought about flea markets i will definatly try that this year ..and as far as clembos question ..what i find interest in is significant years of my life...fathers birthdate ,mothers b-date , kids b-day that kind of stuff...i also like morgans ..i never have been big on internet buying for fear of identity theft but maybe i am just paranoid too...lol

There are a lot of coin shows in and around the Pittsburgh area all year. Pick up a Coins magazine and look at the show listings in the back, and I bet you'll have one closer to you than you thought.

    Commit Seppuku.

But in all honesty, go into places like pawn shops and junk stores. You'd be amazed at what you can find, even if your just browsing. Sometimes you can find a deal.

If no coin shows, try pawn shops. Then of course there are flea markets. My favorites are garage/yard/estate sales. DO NOT go to estate auctions. They are usually, not always, filled with ringers. An auction house takes over, brings in a few individuals that bid on everything to up the prices. Those are the ringers. If you try the garage/yard/estate sales here is the most important thing. You must ASK about coins. Same with guns, knives, etc. You have to ask. Most people that have such sales will not put some items out since those can walk away. And coins are a great example. Always ask. I found one such garage sale where they were giving change to people in old Silver coins from an old jar. I purchased the entire jar. The sellers were reluctant since they may not have change for people but I made it worth that problem with a little extra cash. I once asked and a lady came out with a jar of cents. The entire bottom was all Indian Head Cents. They wanted me to sit down and count them all. I estimated about $35 face and offered $50. They took it and I ended up with a real lot of valuable coins.
    Like I said ASK.
If all else fails, move to Illinois. We have 2 to 4 coin shows here a Month.

Run some ads in any local and nearby Newspapers saying that you want to buy coins...especially Silver coins! If you can pay a little better than any Coin Dealers or Pawn Shops are paying, then you might have more business and coins than you can handle. You may come across some great deals but you will also get a lot of folks calling just to find out how much their' coin or coins are worth. To circumvent these types of callers, you must carefully and clearly word your ad. Use notices such as "Serious callers only", "I do not give appraisals", etc...
