Hey, I've been considering starting coin collecting for a while now, and recently watching a show really piqued my interest. Obviously I want to start off doing some research, so what are some books (outside of Whitman's Guide to Coin Collecting) that I should be looking for? Personally I'm interested in Canadian coinage, as it's my history and heritage, which makes pricing and learning harder (and maybe more rewarding?) it seems... Jeremy
One book I have, and would strongly suggest is: "2004 North American Coins & Prices - A Guide to U.S., Canadian And Mexican Coins - 13th Edition" By Krause publications Retail price is $17.99
There is. A couple of times a year Coin World publishes a price guide for Canadian coins. It is a part of the regular magazine so a subscription would likely be necessary as I am not sure exactly when they do this. But they do do it. They also publish a price guide for Mexican coins on the same basis.
Good to know, thanks... Btw, your website seems down. Not responding to any requests. Also, what's a "series"? Is it all the coins published that year (lunar loons in 2003 here in Canada)? Is it good to collect these? Reason I ask is that I used to collect baseball cards when I was much younger. When I was 14 I had 22,000$ in cards through shrewd collection and trading. Some of the most valuable aspects of them when they were sold were the 'custom collections'. All of the years from the local baseball team, for instance. I'll definitely pick up a subscription to Coin World and Canadian Coin News
A "series" is all the coins minted of a specific design and denomination. This would include all the date and mintmark combinations. One example of a series would be, Buffalo Nicklels 1913-1938 PDS.
Yes I know. Unfortunately my previous host's domain is no longer viable. I am working on rebuilding the site though and hope to have it back up and in working order soon. Peter, the owner and administrator of Coin Talk has generously offered to host my new site. It will be much the same as it was before with many new links added
You mentioned geting a subscription to Canadian Coin News. This is a very good idea as they publish every 2 weeks and contain an up to date price guide for most Canadian coins. you should also get a book and I would recommend Teh Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins
