While I have had a good few rupees in my collection I have decided I will start working on a broad India rupee set with a range of about 1600-1920. So many different varieties and the cost isnt bad. I picked these 9 up this week. Does anyone here specialize in India coins that might be willing to exchange some information/help. Indore Maheshwar Mint Rupee AH1203(1789) Bhopal Muhammad Akbar II Rupee RY18 (1823 AD) Mughal Shan Jahan Multan Mint Rupee AH1060(1650) Gwalior Jankoji Rao Gwalior Fort Mint Rupee AH1244(1828) Farrukhabad Ahmadnagar Shah Alam II Rupee AH1219 (1804) Partabgarh State Uday Singh Rupee AH1236/45 (1821) Mughal Aurangzeb Surat Mint Rupee AH1117/49 (1705) Mughal Shah Alam II Hardwar Mint Rupee AH1219 (1804) Indore State ino Shah Alam II Rao 1/2 Rupee
I like them but I have so much trouble with identification that I have never tried to collect them. There are a few there but....
Nice coins to start a set! I collect rupees too... and I stay away from the 1/2 rupees since that is a whole another beast! All the best!
Yea it helps to have Indian friends or others that collect to help each other out. I cant read them either.
I plan on doing a mostly silver, some gold and scattered copper set (mixed denomination) kind of like a different variety set from all the ages 1600-1900 as well as province mints and other issues. There is definitely enough material to be had at real good prices.
Added a few more stragglers. Baroda AH1226/RY6 Aanand Rao Gayakwad Rupee. Ik Bangas Nawab Ahmednagar Farrukhabad Rupee Bombay Presidency Half Rupee French India Arkat Mint Shah Alam Rupee Bhopal State AH1289 Nawab Sikandar Begum Rupee
If don't already read Persian, there is a little book by Richard Plant called "Arabic Coins and How to Read Them" which I think you will find useful.
Mughal Empire Shah Alam II, AD 1760-1806 , Shahjahanabad Mint Bundo Chehra State Rupee Baroda State Shree Sayaji Rao Gayakwad Half Rupee Delhi Sultanate Alauddin Mohd Khilji Rupee (1296-1313) Mughals AH1172 Aalamgir Gwalior Mint Rupee
Nice coins! I think the Allaudin Khilji coin would be called a Tanka since the rupee didn’t come along later until the 1500s.
I love the Bundi coins since they tended to make spelling mistakes on them. I think yours has one too - it looks like they have written Epmeror
