Being interested in coins only, I know little to nothing about paper so this may be a dumb question. I do understand that condition is everything but are modern, current issue star notes worth a premium?
Not really. I guess it depends on how many were printed which stars always have a lower printing. I tend to keep them just for fun. Maybe someday when physical money becomes a thing of the past they will have a premium lol.
Some are, most are not. It depends on availability and print size. Try finding either one of these, and tell me what they're asking.
Hi SteveInTampa, Top note 32K print run. CU used to be in the $500 range, now it is more like $700+. I have 2, one AU and one about as worn as a modern note can get, I'll say vg/f. I have seen a similar vg/f note offered for $300 with no takers. I have 2 circulation finds for the bottom note, a low print note as well with either a 160 or 320K printing, I can't remember right off the top of my head. I have recently seen this graded 66, I believe, asking $700 with no takers. Do you know of any 100 pack finds for either of these. I am new here and find your postings to be most informative.
No, neither of those runs was issued in pack form. These days, some runs of star notes are used as full packs, and other runs are used as replacement sheets when an error is caught before the sheets have been cut. Both of the above runs were sheet-replacement runs, so they entered circulation one or two notes at a time, sprinkled through packs of regular notes. That's another reason, in addition to the low printage totals, that they command fairly strong prices: nobody can just get lucky at the bank and find 100 of them at once. (By the way, the 2009 H..* run appears to have been 320,000 notes. For some reason that run was never included in the BEP's production reports, so we don't have an official total. But we've seen 0031xxxx serials and nothing higher, so the 320,000 figure seems pretty solid.)
Many Thanks for the info. The BEP has gotten pretty lax with these reports. Back in the day they would mail me the info and it would come like clockwork.
Recent addition to the Star note collection, not rare, expensive, etc. But I did receive it in change from my local donut shop. Second star I've gotten there. Hmm, that may be maple frosting on the face.LOL
Received in change today. No, not from donut shop this time. Not rare but it is a Star note and the price was right.
