I have a silver certificate and another $5 red seal note that are both star notes but the star is before the serial number instead of behind, Is there any significense to this or is it just what was done back then as opposed to now? I know what the star is for but I've known them for it being at the end so is it differnt for it being in the front?

I think of your red and blue seals layout as normal. (I am dating myself. Federal Reserve Notes are normal these days.)

Federal Reserve Notes were a special case. The letter just preceeding the serial number is the Federal Reserve District letter in all cases. Thus the star on those is found on the end.f
