This is something that I have been wondering about for a long time. What does that "star" in the serial number mean on paper money? I see it once in a while and it's a mystery to me. David
The star indicates a replacement note, a replacement for one that was flawed during the printing process, as I understand it the star notes are made first and are then substituted for serial numbers that are messed up during the printing run. due to that fact the number of star notes of any given run vary . Iam no expert on paper currency, but perhaps someone who is can be a little more precise in the answer.
Yeah, Susan, it seems like the older I get, the more I learn. LOL I already knew about Star notes, but I usually learn a little something every day. Hope I never get too old to do that.
OK, I understand what the star note is used for, to replace a misprinted note, the next question is why replace it. Why not just skip to the next serial number and be done with it? Does it help in stopping counterfeiting, and if so how?
Notes are distributed in packets of 100. By replacing any damaged or defective notes with star notes, each packet can start with serial number XX#####001 X.
