Has anyone dealt with SGS - Star Grading Service (www.stargrading.org)? Are they legit? How long have they been around? They have only an email contact and the web page seems to be pretty light. I notice that a lot of auction coins seem to be graded by them. Thanks, Troy
Star Grading Service is not considered a respected certification service. I believe they exist so that the owner can claim he is selling a 'certified MS70' coin on ebay...
RUN!! Read this past thread on SGS: http://www.cointalk.org/thread3171-sgs-(star-grading-services).html
Greetings all, I have not posted before I just like this site so much.I have to say that I bought a couple coins from SGS that were ms70.I found better examples in my pocket change.I have a question. I am going to send them for grading. I bought some coins fron coin vault or the other one thats on and was given a couple free certificates for grading thru ICG.I will send them in. I guess i should send them in the orginal holders they came in. I am sure that will give them something to laugh at.I will let you know the outcome. Thank you, Bruce ps- 1968S nickel 1968D nickel 1981S SGS 1981P SGS 1981D SGS
Draco....if you still have time crack the coins out of the slabs...you might get better grades then if you just send them in an old SGS holder...the grader mgith just say..."well...this should be marked down to XXXX because its in a SGS holder"....now I'm not saying that is right but it mgiht happen.... Speedy
Did you see where they claim 7% of all slabbed coins sold on eBay are graded by SGS? I really can't believe so many people fall for this. Simply doing a bit of research before making a purchase could at least get a potential buyer oriented to the TPGs and make them a bit more informed.
It's the nature of new collectors - you trust. You take an AU55 coin and slap a MS69 sticker on it, and you will fool a LOT of people. Ebay is an excellent platform for pesenting an illusion of professionalism that can fool a lot of people.
I agree,I bought it hook line and sinker. If it wasn't for finding this place. I would still be bragging about SGS. I put down what coins we bought from SGS and it was two nickles and the three 1981 coins were Susan B. Anthony dollar. I guess I better not send in the holders with the coins. I will take your advise and remove them. They probably would punish me for buying from them. I will let you all know how it turns out. I am sure they will send it back with a note-please do not waste our time sending in garbage. We know were you got this!!! I thank everyone who responded to my question. I would like your opinions on two other coins I bought on e-bay.I will get them out and get back with you all soon. I really appreciate your help. Thank you, Bruce Denton

Greetings TAS2826, I am sorry that its taken awhile to get back with you.I have been traveling for work.I did send my coins in ,but not until 8-22-05.I have not had a reply yet.It only cost 15.00. we received this coupon when my wife ordered coins fromTV.I sent in 1968s nickel and 1981p SBA.I am sure I just threw my money away when I bought fron SGS.It is worth the 15.00 just to get a laugh when they do come back I will post the results and pictures.I will also provide the listing from SGS with what they claimed them to be.
