Thought I'd share this urbs roma coin with you.... found it in a large batch of coins I bought on Friday. I've never seen one with three stars, but I know a X in between stars exists and an N I think. Sorry, only reverse as my camera packed up (battery issues) but once I've cleaned the coin ill repost pics. Post your urbs reverses of rarer types if you own any...
Nice find, don't think I have seen that before either, but I don't look at these much. URBS ROMA (335 - 336 A.D.) Æ4 O: VRBS ROMA, Helmeted head of Roma Left. R: Romulus and Remus suckling from she-wolf S * * R above. SMAL(Delta) in exergue. Alexandria Mint 15mm 1.5g RIC VIII Alexandria 8, rated C2
I like that coin Mat... I've been lucky enough to sort through some big old bags of urbs ... so I appreciate the less common types. Its funny how the style of the wolf can also be attributed to the mints quite easily too.... I'll post a thread one day with the wolf types and their associated mints..... If I ever get an afternoon free !
I'll be interested to see other's responses. I believe I've seen the three stars above, but not in my collection. I only have the two star version.
VRBS ROMA with chi-rho between the stars: Only at Arelate (Arles) which had been renamed Constantina in 328 in honor of Constantine II, hence the mintmark SCONST. 17 mm. 1.74 grams. RIC Arles 400, page 277, volume VII. From the Bicester (Oxon) hoard of folles, with coins from AD 317-348.
These chi rho types are nice. I am a fan of the coins minted at arelatum... I like their style, the metal was of a good quality and the coins are generally a little larger than lrb 's minted at other mints.
Here is a pic of the OP coin which I have now cleaned..... My 10 year old son and I just finished cleaning a few from a batch I bought of uncleaned coins on Friday. They are cleaning up nicely so far.
Oh he loves his coins bing..... For Christmas he had 3 coin trays and a nice Sigmund hammered coin. He can recognise most 4th century mint marks and he I'd'd a carausius my dad found metal detecting last year from the faint outline of a bust. I've always encouraged him to help me sort through batches and he loves the cleaning where they appear from under the grime.
I would personally never mind sharing good, useful and informative info among my coin- friends. Just remember what Pish did in this respect. Anyway, everyone has his or her own opinion.
Not quite the same thing Charles. I was just asked not to put my magic soup on the internet for safety reasons. If I remember correctly YOC was sworn to secrecy.
