Hi, Question 1: I have 3 Standing Liberty Quarters with the dates worn off. I am curious to know if there is another way to determine the approximate dates of the coins. All three are Variety 2 with Stars Below the Eagle and one of them has an "S" Mintmark. Question 2: If the dates are worn off are they still worth anything? Thanks in advance! Chop
Well, the only date not a tyII is the 1916. However in 1925 the date was recessed to help with the wear issue. So most likely the coins fall in the 1917 to 1924 date range. Your S mint could be any one of the 17-20,23, or 24. the plains could be 17-21,23 or 24. Other than hitting them up with some kind of weak acid on the date portion that is about as far as you're going to get.
Chop, welcome to Coin Talk. Even with the dates worn off, the silver content and age of the series still gives it value so hang onto it.
Thanks for the replies! I am new here and I might have a lot more questions as I sort through an old collection of coins from grandpa. Chop
Forgive me for misunderstanding, BQ... but when I saw "the only date which is not type II is 1916", I too felt that was incorrect. It's a bit misleading, since one can find non-1916 coins with which are not type IIs. There's probably no since in belaboring it... we're all on the same page.
I have not seen mentioned... 1916 and 1917 Type 1 have no stars below the eagle. Good indicator to use.
Look at your Red Book. There's a Type III (1925-1930), the recessed date variety. If you look at the pics you may be able to limit your SLQ's to a Type II (1917-1924). Or III.
