I'm curious if anyone knows anything about some of the stamped pennies I've found so far. One is with JFK's head. One with the state of Alaska and a third I found today with the State of Missippi on it.

I remember back in the 80s there was a card with the JFK head on it and it mentioned all the similarities between Lincoln's assassination and JFKs ... Some sort of gimmick to get you to buy a stamped penny. However, these ones with the states are new to me. They are stamped on 1970s pennies and any info anyone could provide would be helpful.

I guess I'm wondering how does one stamp a coin? And is it legal? I know the artist who did the artwork for the Kansas Coin and made a stamper and is stamping every single Kansas quarter he can to ruin it because he's mad the Mint changed his artwork on his coin without his approval. Interesting way to make a point, but nonetheless every coin he stamps suddenly decreases its collectability to near face value.

It would be fun to stamp certain coins and see if you get them back later in change. Something like the state of Michigan or something. I wouldn't want to do it to good collectible coins though. I'd pick something like 1990 plains that are in poor condition and not collectable. Anyone know where one can get a stamper? Or how they're made? If it's illegal then I won't do it of course.

I have a penny or two with a state stamped into it. I believe they were doing that around the bicentennial in, you guessed it, 1976! I'll have to dig mine out an look at it again. :)Mickey
