I know what it means, and let's just say it has something to do with Obama.

Are you sure the coin was stamped? (Maybe counterstamped?) It looks more like it was etched or sandblasted.

nope. looking at the coin with a 10x loupe you can see the damage around the letters outside edge, and between the lines. stamped.

Wow....when the presidential elections were coming to a head, everyone though Bush was the antichrist and Obama was the second coming of Jesus.
Now nobody will even admit voting for our Commander in Chief....

One thing most americans have is a problem with short term memory.....

I think that coin is actually very funny....although I'm still waiting for all that "Hope-y/Change-y" stuff to kick in so we can all enjoy it.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled coin collecting program.

(Oh...and re-elect Carter....he's the best president that Panama ever had).

My brother-in-law has one of those bumper stickers. He is the most ignorant person I know, and he doesn't bother to vote. He supports the Tea Party (verbally only of course) lol

Isn't that illegal, otherwise known as defacing our currency!

People have been defacing US coins probably since the beginning. "Love tokens" consisting of one side of a US coin planed off and inscribed with "I love Effie" or whatever were fairly popular in the 19th century, and "Hobo" nickels consisting of various alterations made to usually the Indian's portrait on Buffalo nickels were popular during the Depression. My understanding of the anti-defacement law is that it applies when the intent is to defraud-- for example, drilling a hole in a quarter and putting a string through it to fake out vending machines.

Defacing a coin is one thing but the total disrespect for the presidency is what is so unbelievable. What are kids of these people being taught?!

I hope that one day this type of ignorance will be eliminated! My child is taught that if you don't like something then it is up to you to change it, that is why you vote. You may not like what is happening in the White House, but the office gets the respect that the leader of our country deserves. If we don't respect it then what are we showing the outsiders looking in? Other nations won't respect it!

Sad days when or highest office gets shown total disrespect from it's own people! No matter your view of the president the office of president deserves respect in the public eye as there is always others watching your actions.

If I recall, the law in general doesn't prohibit mutilating coins, absent the intent to defraud, with a few exceptions. One is when the intent is to advertise (i. e., you mark a coin with a company name or, as in this case, a recognizable social/political statement, and return it to circulation). Another is when the government decides the coinage is threatened, as when the prices of nickel is high enough that it's worthwhile to acquire and melt large numbers of five-cent pieces. Such a ruling occurred last year, I think.

    Well said, Dion!

For those reading this thread, consider also that a few of the previous posts are coming from YNs not yet of legal voter age.

Thank you Krispy! We need to treat the office the way we do our flag. This is still the best place to live on earth.

I really believe the majority of people in this country just don't understand the complexities of our government and also the time it takes to actually implement something. You know, it can easily take 7 years from initial planning stage to turning the first shovel of dirt on a construction project. Some take longer. But we are a people who seek instant gratification, as can be evinced by our large corporations that pursue a very short range business plan. We want it now ! From fast food to personal wealth. Quicker is better. But some things just cannot be accomplished in short time frames, no matter how hard we try. IMHO
