I am posting this for a friend of mine. Wanted to get everyone's opinions because I am not familiar with stamped coins and whether they hurt or help the value of the coin any. A little research shows that Yankee Robinson was a circus in the civil war days. He apparently made 3 different types of admission coins with the other two being specifically made for him. From what I have read, this seems to be the more rare piece with possibly on 5 samples known. Can this be confirmed? Is there a higher value to this?
There was a coin world article about Yankee Robinson counter stamps about a year ago. I'll see if I can't dig it up. http://www.coinworld.com/Articles/ViewArticle/yankee-robinson http://www.coinworld.com/articles/viewarticle/numismatic-nomenclature Here's what a similar one sold for at heritage six years ago : http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=430&lotIdNo=10002
Thank you for the info Cole. $529 six years ago, I wonder how much the market has changed on them. If he is looking to sell it, should he get it certified or best to sell it raw?
If your counterstamp is listed in a recognized catalog or journal...and it is...they will certify it Fall Guy. Most counterstamps aren't though because it's not necessary. I have hundreds of different ones in my collection and not a single one is certified. BTW, there are between 20 and 30 of these documented, all except one example on Half Dollars like yours. That's a nice one you have. Not all are struck up that well. I have one in my collection and will post the pic if I can find it. Bruce
