Here's a couple photos of the only St Gaudens I own. I'm thinking of sending it in to be slabbed..is it slab worthy? any idea of what grade it might be? The third part of the question is if I send it off to be graded, I'm thinking of using Dominion Grading Service. I read a mostly positive thread here on these guys..waddya' think?
I would just for authenticity. Not really looked at DGS graded coins. Personally PCGS or NGC - thats if it grades. I am not any good at grading these puppies so wait for an expert.
The coin looks to be cleaned in someway, either a light polishing or that electrolysis cleaning I've heard and seen so much of... Any way, DGS is a no go... If you want to send it in to get graded (if it is non cleaned) NGC or PCGS If you know for a fact it is cleaned, and what some kind of a grade, send it into ANACS, so they can give the "Polished ___ DETAILS" grade... Looks like an AU details coin
I'd say, the grading of this coin is around EF40-AU55 There are many marks on the reverse, and the coin is circulated, there is no doubt. The nose has good detail And the knee is somewhat seeable, so I'd be comfortable with this coin grading AU50
It's a common date, and (I think) AU, maybe cleaned. It's worth, in my opinion, about the value of the gold that it contains. MS example are incredibly common. Sending it in to a service would be primarily to prove that it's authentic. I think any of the "big 3" would be fine, but so would DGS, in my opinion. They can authenticate as well as anyone, and their grading is accurate, as far as the opinions I have read online. If you want it for your collection, I would just leave it as is.
I disagree. As long as it's genuine, it would fetch at least 15% over melt on ebay. You don't see genuine Saints go for $900. Anyways, I agree with the AU grade, and possibly some form of cleaning/polishing. The surfaces do look a bit odd, or maybe it's just the lighting.
Thanks for all of the responses. The photos were taken in a hurry..the actual color of the coin is deeper..but I'm not sure it hasn't been lightly cleaned. In hand, I thought EF-40 is about right..it could stretch to a low AU grade..but I think it's a safe EF-40. At this point I'm undecided about sending it in..I can always exercise that option down the road..
From the pictures, the coin does look cleaned... Better pictures might proves us wrong.. We don't have the advantage of seeing it in hand... You can send the coin to me, although you'd never see the coin again! (MUH HAHAHAHA) (EVIL LAUGH) LOL
This coin was originally in a bezel. I liberated it by very carefully slotting the outside of the 4 tabs that were holding the coin. I used a dremel tool with a diamond blade. Although I was able to get it out without any additional damage, if you look at the reverse in the sun at the bottom, you'll see a tab mark that was the result of the coin being held by one of the tabs. 2 of the tabs were not touching the coin and the other one was barely hitting the surface. My suspicions about it being cleaned are related to the fact that it was intended to be worn as jewelry, hence it's probably more likely that this coin was cleaned at some point.
I think I might have kept it in the bezel, and just wore it around my neck Makes you certainly look stylish, and you'll always have a story to tell.. (Of course you will be a number 1 victim of robbery ) Beautiful coin..
Yeah..I don't think I could quite carry off the "bling" look. There's been more than one NBA player that's been the victim of a robbery because they were wearing the equivalent of a mini-Fort Knox on various parts of their body. I'll go with the "stealth wealth" in a safe deposit box.
HAHA, you guys are too funny! Here's an "ethical" question for you all....somewhat related. Obviously, now that you mention it, this coin would be considered "ex-jewelry" which would significantly affect the value. I can see 4 discoloration marks on the reverse. However, none of us previously noticed the tab marks, so did not consider that. So here's the question: If a coin was removed from the bezel, but it was done professionally so that no one noticed it had ever been in jewelry(no markings, solder, cleaning etc...); should it still be considered "ex-jewelry" when the piece is placed for sale? This particular coin wouldn't apply since there are signs of it being ex-jewlery. In light of this, I think ksparrow is more correct about the coin being worth essentially melt. Still, it is a neat piece with history!!
DSG is wrothless! DSG sucks !!!I know they lost a coin I send them & set one there holder upside down! But ANACS will grade it right!
If nobody could see the marks, or tell... Than how would the grading companies know... (You just have to hope the seller is honest)
I heard from somewhere that DGS was keeping up with the top, and was better than ICG... I guess not... Well top 4 remain... PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG... (YES IN THAT ORDER! LOL)
