how do they compare to the round coin tubes? which are better and why? i have some round ones and i need more tubes but i see that there are square tubes. which would you recommend i get and why?
How do they compare? The round tube is most often round and clear. The square tube is most often frosted (i.e. not clear) Which are better and why? I prefer the square tubs because they don't roll away. I can stack them on their sides and put them on a box. Round tubes most often are stored vertically and offer less flexibility when storing. They flop all around and just make a mess.
I've been told the round tubes, under certain environmental conditions, can shrink, causing the coins to become stuck, and forcing the owner to break them apart to retrieve the coins.
I use both. The squares for reasons stated, and the rounds fit into the Red 50 tube boxes well, the squares are difficult to remove
I've done it too many times actually. Freeze them then break them. On a positive note if you find a dealer that does NOT know these tricks you can pick up some cherry rolls really cheap.
square vs. round? = square wins hands down. Easier to lable, don't roll and stack much better. And when U put 'em in your pocket, it looks like a square tube of coins rather than a round tube of coins . . . Lol.
When I needed more tubes I went with the square ones for all the obvious reasons stated above. Why not? Bruce
This is absolutely true. I obtained an absolutely fantastic roll of 1958 quarters...all gems. It took me about an hour to get the darn things out of the tube, and I know I damaged one coin in the process. I wish I had thought of the freezing thing, but even if I had, I may not have done it, because I would have been worried about condensation as the coins were warming up.
I have found holding the tube under the faucet with hot water works easier. The coins slide right out after a few seconds in the water. And it is not long enough to heat up the coins.
AJ, grabbing the square tubes out of the box is a breeze with a small philips screwdriver placed in one of the little holes in the top. : ) I use one of the little pocket screwdrivers and it works great. Hope this helps.
Well if you have a safe use the square they stack better. If you store coins in your closet use the square one's they wont roll.
I store my coins in a Locking mechanics Snap On tool cabinet. I only use square tubes so that they wont roll. (I took out the rubber matting so that I can fit the tubes inside, otherwise they won't fit with the matting.)
square................................... i read an article that stated the square tubes are made of pvc safe plastic as opposed to the not so safe round tubes. it was in coin world. i'll have to check which issue it was and get back to you all.
