    I have one of these. The coin is used to do magic tricks. It come with a Mexican 20 centavos coin that fits in the slot. That is a genuine half. If you purchase the coin at a magic shop it cost about $30.

    There are cases where a coin similar to this could have significant value. No I don't mean these modern pieces that are sold in novelty shops, I mean box coins from the 18th and 19th centuries.

    They would take two coins of the current day, hollow out the inside with the two halves held together by a small hinge so the coin opened like a box - thus the name. The coins were sometimes used in the far east to hold opium, others might have used them like a snuff box. But the point is, such coins do exist and an original in good condition would be highly sought after.
