Hi, I'm a great fan of toning on old silver coins but I'm not as keen on the silver sulphide spots that can mar a nice newer coin (see attached example). Any suggestions? I have several unc coins with similar problems.
These are typically imperfections in the planchet before the coin is struck, and nothing can be done about that. Occasionally, this kind of damage can also be caused by saliva, or some other caustic liquid, being sprayed on the surface of the coin. Again, after the damage is done, there is nothing to be done for the coin. Sorry.
1. You are not sure what that spot is so attempting to remove it may prove to be a horrible outcome for that coin. 2. Not sure about the slab it is in but occationally when people open slabs, they scratch the coins. 3. In order to see that spot better you would have to take it out. May not be worth the problem and may prove nothing. 4. Seal the ends with tape to prevent further problems.
