Will an acetone bath get rid of these spots on the revese of this 1939-D Quarter? TIA http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/9818/img3307um2.jpg http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/8444/img3308kt1.jpg
I would say no. The coin appears to have been dipped already in order to remove dark toning - what you see now is what was not removed by the dip.
yes, the soapy wash. However, it may also be PVC which can be removed easily in acetone. Anyone else think that it may be PVC?
There are several things that tell me it was dipped - the coin has less luster than it should; the wear spots are the same color as the rest of the coin; the dark spots themselves ( you can see how some of them were partially removed and still see remnants where dark toning was but is no longer ); the mint mark being dark only in the center - that is not how toning works; and the dull grey uniform color. And no I do not think this was PVC, if it had been the dip would have removed it - all of it.
I agree with Doug. I suspect the toning was very dark, and as such the coin was overdipped in order to remove the toning. I personally would leave the coin alone in this case.
Actually the coin has excellent luster. Just put the coin on a stand on the window sill with not much light when I took the picture. I will just leave the coin the way it is. Thanks everyone. Here is another coin I know wasn't dipped. I think my camera work stinks. http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/9199/img3363bj5.jpg
Tried a picture with a little more light This picture look any better? Same 1939D. http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/7749/img3366nu1.jpg
Sorry Ben- Trying to work on my picture taking skills. Just wanted to show the coin did have nice luster and I think all I needed to do was get more light on the coin to take a better picture. Coin is back in the album untouched. Thanks.
