Well I dunno about that one, but box coins (that's what they call them) have been around for hundreds of years. Some say that they were used to smuggle opium way back when. Others say they were used by spies, pirates and all sorts of, shall we say, less desirable types. But there were those that were manufactured for sentimental reasons as well - to keep a picture in like you would with a locket. Some of them even had hinges to make opening & closing them easier. And in today's world, they are commonly made as cheap magic tricks. You can start off with a half dollar, have a quarter inside that and inside that have a cent or dime.
