Hi All, I was wondering if anyone has any information on split hinge coins. I seem to have one, a 1942 wheat penny. Alan Herbert's Official Price Guide to Mint Errors -- "A hinged split blank is defined as a blank which has split in two, parallel to the faces, but remains joined by a small area of unsplit metal. A blank may split in two except for a small hinge which keeps the two portions together. The split may occur anywhere in the minting process. The split must be normal and the blank must show no evidence of prying the pieces apart, with the normal striations of a split blank visible or assumed if the piece isn't spread far enough to see the interior. Resist the impulse to pry it apart as the joined pieces are worth substantially more than a split piece" It is very hard to photograph this coin, as you end up not seeing the hinge.
