I have seen a lot of people talking about spiked cents. I have a few of these myself like the "spiked head" ones. I also have one I like to call a "spiked eye". Are these just novelties or are they really becoming sought after types. Just wondering. Thanks!
Without photos, I'm assuming that you're referring to coins with a die crack or gouge into the head. Yeah, there are people who like to give them catchy names (like the Pi$$ing Minuteman) because it makes them easier to sell to bidiots. As far as I'm concerned, the stupid names are just novelties that don't really add to the numismatic value of the coin. Chris
As Chris said above. And, these are more likely to be collectible, but not of great value, if they are "fatal" cracks that start at the head and reach the rim and are in high grade B.U. condition, otherwise are quite common with little value.
Here are some examples the first has cracks through the hair and eye plus slag on earlobe. The other has slag from rim straight through head.
Your 1972 looks to be a Misaligned Die Strike! See the slight Double False rim to the right of the date?
Thanks for pointing that out Paddyman98. I meant to ask about that also as far as any real value to it.
It's considered a very minor error. Common on Cents from the 1970's. I collect them but they really don't have much of a high premium. The larger denomination coins that have Misaligned Die Strikes are more desirable. Here are 2 from my collection -
