Any of you high-rollers gone around town spending the Washington golden dollars? I was curious about the kind of reactions you are getting. I'd suspect people would be fascinated with the new coin and would want to trade it out of the register for a greenback from their own pocket. I just don't think the general public is all that aware of the new coin. I haven't personally seen any circulating yet.
prez dollars only the collectors and investors enjoying at this moment. while the general public is still don't accept it before and after. it is too bulky. make it around quarter size or smaller. then it will click.
I have given ti to a few cabbies and they have mostly not wanted to take it and /or wanted to give em dirty looks. I dont think its working.
kinda neat I went and got two roles from the bank today. Looked them over for any errors (missing lettering, double motto ect...) didn't find anything worth writing about. At work during lucnh I gave one to my boss(owed him a dollar) and he wanted one. Before i knew it everyone in the office wanted one for someone. Ten minutes later I had ended up giving them all away but three. So im using the money to get more roles on the way home. Oh yeah, I didn't have the heart to charge them for them i just changed em out if anyone is wondering.
clear up I just read that back I dint "give" them away i traded them for dollars. wish i had enough $$$ to do that!
size perception I hear a lot of people say they don't like the large size. They are really not much bulkier than a quarter, and I've never heard anybody complain about having 4 or 5 quarters in thier pocket. this seems a little strange to me.
the pres. dollars are thinner than all the previously-coined dollars, and a lot sleeker too. also, i love the lighter golden tone. it picks up light and shines a lot more. makes me feel like i'm handling gold coins (almost...) :goofer:
I spent 5 today at a local grocery store on a fish lunch. The older lady (mid to late 50s) behind the counter seemed pleasant enough until I brought these up. I asked her if she had been given any of these yet and she said no. Asked her what she thought of them and her reply was "I hate the things". I really think she was referring to the general coin not specifically the Presidential Coin Series. I will spend all 25 to see the reactions I get. As a side note found a great bank today that was VERY coin collector friendly - they sold me the roll and would have sold me as many as I wanted. I really think they are going to work with me roll searching just about anything I want to look for. Another good coin day :smile and I dare not forget the help of others with my growing armada
Well I finally got up the nerve and tried some of these at McDonald's this afternoon. The kid at the register looked at me like I was handing her Chuck E. Cheese tokens.
Why would you have to be a "high roller" to spend a dollar coin that most of you (not me *weep* see signature) can get at any bank?
I haven't seen any yet, but I don't understand how that is possible, since the enabling legislation required them to have the same metallic composition as the Sacs. Have you actually compared small stacks of each?
People here seem a little excited about them. Today I went into the bank and grabbed 10 out of a roll. The teller was convinced that there was no mint mark on the coins and asked how anyone could tell where they'd been minted. I flipped one on its edge and showed her the "D." She was pleasently surprised. I've shown several to my coworkers and they've all wanted one. I'm betting that the novelty wears off by about the James Monroe coin.....
How come sac dollars where promoted so heavily; but, I have yet to hear anything about these new dollar coins. Like it's predecessor, I think this new program will go over like a lead balloon. ( It's doomed to fail.)
I think I posted this somewhere before, but I'll add... I've been spending them atleast 3 days a week at Subway and in our vending machine at work... Each time I pick up some subway for luch I spend 5... If its been a really bad or hectic day, I'll toss one in the Vending machine to get something chocolate, so I don't kill anyone...
I recently purchase some of the Washington dollar rolls on eBay. After I go through the rolls I share them with my fellow employees. I've been asking them to give me what I purchased them for. It comes out to about $1.30 apiece and most always give me more than what I spent on them. Initially, there's always great interest in a new series. It's too bad the Mint is overproducing everything. I promised myself I wouldn't collect the Presidential dollars. I already put three rolls aside. Oh well. More money tied up. Now if I could just get rid of these State quarter rolls.
I spend them like theres no tomorrow , pay bills;eat out-should have seen the look on that guys face when I gave him 55 of them to cover dinner;pay for just about everything with them , I try to get as many as I can out on the streets.
I'LL be going to Las Vegas next week and i'll take 2 rolls with me to pass out for tips. I'll be there for 2 weeks so the coins will be gone by day 2 or sooner. Lou
i tried to use one at a drug store and was asked if i had a paper bill she didn't have a place in the register for them
I spend these at Quiznos (submarine sandwich chain), and the guy told me he buys them out of the register to use for tolls...
