I found this today in a bank roll. It's a 1984 D cent with two cracks/gouges (I'm still learning). Is this a "good one" finally? Most of what I've been finding are deteriorated die examples, so I'm kinda hoping this is one to show off. Hope the pics are good enough to show the detail.
Those are some nasty looking gouges. I'm surprised it was still in circulation. And WELCOME to the forum.
They look more like die gouges that die breaks, which, being that large, would extend to the edge of the coin. However, I can't imagine how a die damaged like that would be used to actually strike coins, or if it was, why other examples haven't already turned up. As a (un)educated guess I'll say it's an extended die chip through the LIBERTY. Could the chip have broken off and caused the die gouge on the other side of the portrait?
Whatever the cause I believe you do have a "good one". Great find! :thumb: Our resident experts are probably sleeping in but will be here soon to let you know. I have a question. In the photo the "crack/gouge" appears to bifurcate on Lincolns forehead and the 2 lines go either through or under the D in GOD. Is this the case or is it just my eyes?
Just your eyes... and a trick with light and dust. I re-examined the coin and there's nothing in that area. The large, lower one extends from the rim at 9 o'clock and ends right at the bottom of the Lincoln image and doesn't reach the lower rim. Thanks for the response.
Seen one close to that on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/1983-LINCOLN-AS...goryZ524QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
That is a retained die break the bottom one near liberty and do fetch a nice premium a retained die break exstends from rim to rim and this is a nice one Good fine I would say the one on ebay is way over priced and it's different then the op's coin the one on ebay is a die gouge.. The other one near lincolns head is a die gouge on your coin Jazzcoins joe
Those are very interesting marks! :thumb: I got to wonder at the cause, since that's a really blundered die? Is it possible this damaged was caused on press when the planchet feeder mechanism got in the way? No answers here, just questions...
nice find! Hello ikandiggit, It looks like your coin may have been struck by a damaged obverse die. The damage is quite deep & can even be seen on some points in Lincoln's bust. I suspect that the die would further fatigue or be taken out of service quickly. Very best regards, collect89
