Has anyone seen the movie "Mongol", which has a split second closeup of a coin in the opening credits? Set in 11th Century Mongolia, and telling the story of the early life of Ghengis Khan, its an excellent movie with English subtitles and fantastic photography, but my casual knowledge of cash coins was nowhere near sufficient to tell in the brief interval it was shown whether they were using a genuine coin of the era, a later but still genuine coin, or one especially made for the movie.

My suspicion is 20th Century, as it gave the impression of being struck, not cast.

In later scenes "ropes" of coins are shown, but not close enough to see the design, although the size seemed to be at the large end of the range.

Saw the movie, saw the coin, but that's about all I can tell you as I know far, far less about them than you do. Coins of Asia are one area of the hobby where I never even tried to learn a single thing, doubt I ever will.

Why ? Because of the alphabets used. I have enough trouble figuring out things about coins issued using the Roman alphabet let alone Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Arabic and whatever other ones they may use.

Like GDJMSP, I know nothing about those coins. I am trying to learn about more modern foreign coins like France, Brazil, Australia etc...

Maybe if you ask my friend Ripley, she might be able to help with any question you may have. I would like to watch the movie though. It sounds very interesting.
