Does anybody have any ideas about this jeton? It is made of copper, its weight is about 7 gramms. Found in Russia, Moscow region. I guess the jeton could be manufactured in Germany though it looks like spanish. When it could be issued and what is it worth?
looks spanish on the left, for sure. It's similar to a 4 Reales (which would be silver), but I can't make out the mint mark, but the F M assayers initials would be consistant with Mexico (colonial). Beyond that, I can't help much.
Has Hispan written on it so would assume that it was Spanish ! sorry cant make out anything else. De Orc
coopra, How did you determine that this is a jeton and not a coin?I don't know either... just curious because the obverse says King of Spain,Indies..etc.
Jeton Frankly speaking I tried to find out something about this find on Russian coin forums. I received some different answers. The majority of the answers were that this thing is a trade jeton. That is why it could appear in far located village with a merchant or something like this. I think the same because you can see no value on this mint. I found it with my metal-detector in a field where there used to be a village. The jeton was dated somewhere between 18-19 centures. Also I was told that in this period there was the single manufacturer of jetons located in Germany, possibly in Nurenberg (I don't know how to spell it in English correctly). They were producing jetons for many foreign companies like Spanish, etc. I tried to find out any information on different forums. Still I have nothing. Possibly someone here knows some spanish coin forums. I don't speak Spanish that's why I can't even search for such forums in Yahoo... If you can give me some links it would be great.
there is value on it. I'm not saying that it's right, but the 4 R in the legend would be similar to spanish colonial representations of 4 Reales - at least that is how the denomination would show on the reverse of a bust style. If it's a trade token of some sort, it is certainly made to appear similar the 4 Reales.
Could it also be possible that it was carried by a French soldier when they invaded Russia in 1813? Edit - make that 1812.
Possibly you are right. I did not pay attention to 4 r. Maybe this is the value. Did Spain in Europe have Reales as a payment unit in 18-19 centures? Before Euro implementation they had Pesetas and Cents. Speaking about the soldier. There is an opportunity though the find was made 100 km. to the very East of Moscow. The French came from the West, stopped in Moscow and went back. P.S.: Don't beat me because of my questions This is not my topic. I collect Russian medieval coins.
Indeed they did. But Reales are silver currency, and the reverse of your coin would have a bust of the spanish ruler (which would actually be the obverse of a true 4 Reales). I'm wondering if it might have been a French soldier gaming token or Napoleanic medal of some sort. If it were a trade token, wouldn't it be made of silver to compensate in trade value? since your piece is copper, maybe it's a gambling token. I don't know. I'm just guessing. I think the time period would be right for the French invasion.
