Although world gold is my favorite - it is not the only thing I collect. Spanish colonial silver has long held a place in my collection. And although the pillars & waves design is my favorite, I also collect the bust designs. Of the bust designs, Ferdinand VII is my favorite ;)

This 1822 8 reales was struck at the Potosi mint in Bolivia.

GDJMSP, Your photos are causing so much PAIN as I continue my search for world coins! Just when I think I have made a little headway....BAM...you post another outstanding coin! I did purchase a Spanish silver just this morning...Spain 5 Pesetas 1892 Alfonso XIII! Can't wait to get my paws on it! The search for LARGE silver crowns marches on in Indiana!!!

A superb example of the type GD. Nice one!

At one time I was interested in the cob coinage but the opportunity for me at the time to actually get any was very limited. I did manage however to get a few examples. Unfortunatley they are far too `3 dimensional' to scan and my digital camera skills are still in their infancy.

Here's one of the better scans i've managed to do of an early (circa 1614) 8 reales cob I have. I bought six of these about ten years ago all in roughly the same condition. They all have their own `character' though and are decidedly different from each other in shape, the design struck up (or not as the case may be). Fascinating early colonial coinage.

Talking about odd shaped cobs, here's mine (mint, age, etc., all unknown  )

Cob coinage never held much interest for me but there are a lot of collectors that downright love them. And some of them can be exorbitantly expensive. Different strokes for different folks ;)

I could never understand really why the colonial mints began issuing cob coinage - they went backwards technology wise with striking these coins. But I guess as they say, money talks, and the mint masters were more interested in profits than quality product. Hmmmmm - where have we heard that before ?

Roy - I'll see if I can't help ya out a bit with identifying that coin ;)

Well wonder no longer :D This is your answer -

"Easy one...Mexico, 4 reales, Philip V, circa 1702-1715. If you turn the
shield side 90 degree counterclockwise from the photo orientation, you will recognize a shield with 3 fleur-de-lis in the center (Bourbon, hence Philip V) and a clear and bold denomination "4" to the right of the shield. This is a typical shape and condition for these coins, actually pretty decent without any corrosion or damage per se."

I have got a King Amadeo silver 5 Pesetas, which is a very interesting coin,as King Amadeo's reign was very short. The design has the Cross of Savoy instead of the traditional fleur de lys,as King Amadeo was from the Italian Royal Family, which ruled Sardinia prior to 1861.

I'm not used to that term being used with out Mr. Roboto at the end....

I could not agree with you more, Doug. As you know (because I have been picking your brain quite a bit) I just got into collecting spanish colonial - and I have *never* been happier with the results, so far.

I have a couple new pieces on the way, and I will get them posted up as soon as they arrive. I'm very excited.

GD - My book came today. I have only read the forward and about the author sections - Mister Gilboy seemed to live a very exciting life - and I have glanced through some of the actual coin sections.

this has a LOT of information. Worth every cent - and I am a proud owner of one of 500 copies, to boot.

    Thank you for recommending it!

You're more than welcome Rick ;)

Now just be sure you remember that attitude when you find yourself bidding on those R3 & R4 coins. Oh yeah - and tell your wife that taking out another mortgage on the house isn't really a big deal :D

I can see the conversation now:

'but look! it says HIAPSN! Now if you don't mind, I have got to bicycle to work, or I will be late.'

Got my coins in the mail today! The images are actually from Dan's website, because he gets better pictures than I can, at the moment.

I'm very excited, because this is my first escudo coin... first of many, I can say that for certain. it is beautiful :D
