hi there..i'm new here and just bought this coin at a local flea market..i liked it as i am a big fan of pirates and their history..anyways i was wondering if anyone can tell me what it is and if they think it's real? first of all, the guy i bought it from told me he had bought it from the guy who found it off on a shipwreck at Jenson Beach Florida..i took it to a local coin, gold/silver dealer here in town and they couldn't tell me anything about this coin as they didn't deal with coins that old..they did weigh it and said it was 25.4grams, and that they believed it to be silver. they didn't want to acid test it for fear of ruining the value of it...so what do you all think? any comments would be greatly appreciated..thanks tom
First Welcome to CT! As for the coin, I am not sure, will have to wait for a more knowledgeable member to come in. I have a few books on Reales, and that does not look like anything I have seen. With that said I do not collect them either. Regards, Stan
here's a real one for sell at newworldtreasures.com. it is very similiar to the one i have at it weighs 26.4 grams.. the second is another one from else where on the internet
It is supposed to be an 8 reales from the Mexico City mint, struck under Philip V between 1700 and1724. The weight is light from what it should be, and there is so little detail visible in the pics that I cannot say if it is genuine or not.
i tried to take more pictures up close, but they were fuzzier then the first..sorry i couldn't do any better...
These are known as Spanish cobs. The weight is a little light, as has been mentioned, but that could have been due to being clipped in the past. However, I cannot tell you if the piece you own is authentic.
You misunderstood, even if the pics were the best in the world it would not help. There is not enough detail on the coin to say one way or the other. As I said, the weight is light, light by over a full gram. This could mean the coin is fake, or it could mean that the coin has been clipped or shaved. Only an in hand examination by an expert can determine if it is genuine or not.
o.k. thanks everyone..what do you think as fair price is on this? i paid $120 for it after talking the guy down from $150. do you think i paid too much or am i in the right range?(supposing it is real that is)..thanks again tom
also does anyone know of any good places in virginia that is a good place to find an expert to look at it as i am moving there in a week or two...tom
