I would like opinions, please. As far as I can tell, the ebay auctions I'm looking at are for 1/10 oz gold k-rands. I blew up the pictures and was able to ID them in Krause. The seller is marketing them as south africa small k-rands and is selling them in pairs. They sell for under $10 a pair. I looked on eBay and individually, the lowest price I found for these was $40. I have to admit that, at the prices this seller is offering, I bought a couple of his auctions last night. It wasn't much money at risk and it's gold (supposedly). We'll see when they come in. My question is, why would he be selling these so cheap if he could get $40 each? Are there counterfeits known of these? It wouldn't seem worth it to me to counterfeit such a small gold coin. Overall, the seller's feedback is good and he's been selling these for quite a while.
I've seen these before... they are itty bitty little replica coins. I don't think they are technically counterfeit because of the obvious size difference, but I don't know. That is, of course, if this is the same thing I am thinking of.
The size is stated as 11mm and judging by the dimensions and weight of the 1/10 oz gold eagle, you may be right. In which case, he's taking them back because he never stated copy or replica in the auction. How is the thickness of the K-rand in comparison to the thickness on the eagle?
yeah... 11 mm is way too small. The 1/10 k is almost identical in size and thickness of the 1/10 gold eagle. I'm guessing his picture shows a dime holder, and at that price, if they are gold, they must also be paper thin.
You know the saying "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is". I have an out when I get them, so I'm not concerned. It was worth it at the time. Thanks for your help.
are you buying from tlqualls ? if so, I have done business with him before... decent enough guy, but he drop shipped my product, and then treated me like a number - he's a high volume seller, and told me he really only does his 'ebay stuff' on monday's.
Yes, that's him. This is the first item I've ordered from him. My cost was low enough that, even if he doesn't refund, we still won't lose money. Thanks for the info.
There is a series called smallest coins of the world Everybody avoids mentioning the weight which I think is 0.6 grams These coins were supposed to be replicas of famous coins but now they are even doing 20 Francs Belgian Kings which can still be had for melt price Attached is an example from the vatican 10 mm mini http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=89748&item=3947880718&rd=1
If you cannot afford to get the gold Krugerrand, then there is a Silver Krugerrand, which is a privately struck piece.See Silver Krugerrand in the Main Coin Forum. The One-Tenth Krugerrand is a very nice coin.Note;the gold Krugerrand is not a pure gold coin.Although it is inscribed '1 OZ FINE GOLD',it actually weighs more than that,as it is 22 Carat gold, which is the fineness of the British Sovereign.
I got the "coins" today and they are the miniature replicas. Still okay as curiosity pieces. The seller should state "copy" or "replica" in his auctions, though. Speaking as someone who hasn't gone over to the darkside yet, it is easy for someone who doesn't know to think they're getting a real K-rand. Might have to contact eBay about this one just to get the seller to represent them correctly.
Susanlynn9,I don't like those 8 Carat gold replica Krugerrands. To me,they are absolute junk.I prefer the real thing, but as seen as I can't afford the full Krugerrand,I have had to settle for 2 1/10 Krugerrands dated 1984 & 1990,plus a silver Krugerrand dated 1983.
Personally, Aidan, I agree with you. I got burned, but knew that I was taking a chance when I purchased them. For the amount of money I spent, it's simply not worth returning them. The way I see it, I chose to take a chance and lost. Oh well.
Susan, the next time that you are offered them, give them the widest berth possible.Have you ever been offered the 8 Carat replica Mexican pieces with Emperor Maximilian & the replica California gold pieces? You should also give them the flick. It is not worth the time of day & money to buy them. You are better off buying something nice like the silver $5 Maple Leaf coins from Canada & the U.S. silver Eagles.
Susan, have you bought any of the real 1/10 Krugerrand coins yet? They are really beautiful coins.I have got 2 of them, which are dated 1984 & 1990.
No, I haven't yet but I've drooled over quite a few... Money is tight right now and I can't even get my Bust Half collection started yet. I found a really nice one but had to sell it. I got to own it for about 2 weeks. A really nice Overton 113 variety. When finances pick up, I am going to get at least one of the K-rands though. There's something about the design that really appeals to me.
Susan, thank you for your reply.I hear that the weather has been very bad over your way.We have had a lot of coverage on the news over here in New Zealand.
It's been strange. A week before we got this snow storm, it was 75 F. Friday and Saturday we got about 14" of snow and now it's snowing again. That's okay though. I don't mind the bitter cold as long as there's snow. And my kids are having a blast. They had no school today because of the snow and spent all day out sledding. My youngest collapsed and fell asleep at 5:30 and he'll probably sleep until tomorrow morning. It's all good
Well,Susan,I can guess that there'll be no going to work. You'll probably end up slip-sliding if you tried, given the conditions.Better still,if you got some skis, you could get them out & go for a ski.
That's the benefit of working at home. I have my own business so I don't have to go anywhere Though I do work a lot more hours than I did when I was working for someone else, but I love it!
