Helped out an old couple with a PC problem today (for free), scored some coins after they heard i am a collector: Not a big deal at all, but i`m not in US, so i`m rather satisfied. The question is about 1 rand. There are 2 versions from 1988: KM #88, silver, 21 (!) minted, and KM #88a, nickel, 21335000 minted. Its quite obvious which one got, but its worth checking. Near "1" the small letters say J.v.Z (shouldn't it be J.v.T?), the small letters on obverse above "1988" say A.L.S. Are those signatures, especially A.L.S., on both silver and nickel coins, or should only silver one state A.L.S.? Could anyone tell how can i verify its nickel or silver without using the scales?
