I am cleaning and sorting some ancients that I have had for a long time. I get a preliminary description, write it on a 2X2 card, put it in a 2X2 flip and place the unfolded flip in a page designed to hold 2X2 cardboards. Then, I can easily pull them out and update until I have all the information I need. The photos show only the concept that I am using.
That's pretty close to how I keep our ancients. I just type all the information into a google doc and then print and cut them out to put in the flips. I would like to come up to a numbering system but I'm not sure how to do it.
Me too. I see my grandkids cutting up squares of paper. Looks easy. But, try getting the info printed on them is another thing. I think I could do it similar to making a mailing list in MS Word. I'll give it a try. Perhaps we can get a few clues from @furryfrog02 .
If you need a mask, I can send it to you. I just made sure the columns were small enough to fit inside the flips. Wasn't too tough. I get 3 columns per page and probably 6 or 7 coin descriptions per column.
As far as an index system, you could just use your template and number each entry. Then you could export the entries into a spread sheet - maybe.
Yeah that's not a bad idea. I was thinking along the lines of Ruler/Coin Type (Sestertius, denarius, etc)/numerical order I buy them. For instance: Augustus Sestertius first coin (I don't have one but for an example) AS1, then move on to AS2, AS3, etc... It seemed a bit daunting though so I've been affraid to implement something. For now, they are all just hodge-podge in the binder. Especially when my son takes them out to look at them and they don't go back where they came from...
I have posted before the numbering system I use and would be glad to discuss it with anyone interested via Conversation BUT I will really suggest that you think ahead and select a system that will work when you have several thousand coins as well as when you have ten or twenty. Starting over when you have a lot of coins is more work than I care to do so I plan to keep my system as it is now for exactly that reason. This is my coin g51420bb0001 and this is v00597fd3340. The numbers are meaningful to me but do not need to be to anyone else. You need to select a system that is meaningful to you.
@dougsmit I only have a couple hundred right now. I will get back to you when I am ready to start cataloging. Still trying to see what is here. Thanks for the offer.
Enjoy the sorting. Must be fun going through your collection! A time a go I made a decision, to keep my collection small and to use a display so I can see my coins every time. If I keep using this system I will never have more than 119 and something coins in total. This is why I keep improving my collection; saying goodbye to old coins and getting better new ones. Some do not like this system and way of collecting perhaps, but I like it very much. Maybe some day in the future I will change it, but definately not now. I don't use cards as you see. With this small amount of coins its not necessary. I use excel to register my coins and necessary info. My system is useful for a small collection. I basically gave every emperor a number (augustus being #1). My first coin of Augustus is 1.1. My second 1.2 etc. The most coins I have of one emperor are of Hadrian; denarii of his travel series. I register those by adding TS. So, it's 25.TS.1 etc. Some caesars of family members don't have their own number. Brittanicus is part of Claudius. Both have #7. Again, this only works with small numbers of coins.
@Limes Nice collection. I am just starting on my accumulation of ancients. A couple of years ago I started on my US collection. You can see that process by visiting https://www.cointalk.com/threads/sorting-my-70-year-accumulation.330231/ . It does take some time when you try to tackle 70 years worth of stuff.
Browsed through that thread. Thousands of coins, wow!! I dont think I will reach that number With ancients. But with some effort you could try ;-)
I only have a few hundred ancients and am too old to accumulate too many more. But, I think I will try.
