Some Fakes I found.. They will go in my collection of Counterfeits.. These only Cost me a Buck each.. I like having them off the street. They go into a Book with clear markings "FAKES AND COUNTERFEITS", so if I die today my Family will not burn anyone but me... Because I am sure they are going to sell all my stuff for face value!! LOL.
The Chinese counterfeiters have become very adept at reproducing these and "aging" them to appear as though they were circulated coins. Chris
nice, just tell the family to sell them on ebay.. Here: I'll start them off: Hi, my Uncle Lather just passed into the coin shop in the sky. These were passed down to him by his grandfather who bought them from the mint when he was a cowboy in the 1890's. I know that they are real, since they have been in this album for a long time. No returns, No Guarantees, and no nothing.
NEVER.....So Scared of this happening someday. That is one of my issues with keeping a small Counterfeit Collection, I started another post a while back on the issue. It got a bit heated. I know we all HATE these, But.... I have several old fakes, made in the 1920's I think, I do mark the book clearly and hope I have raised my Family better then to burn anyone.... I post these pictures just so some can see the quality of some fakes.. we ALL need to beware. The question is after you have one what do you do with it... Smash it with a hammer was my first idea, But keep them as a warning, a reminder. My biggest fear is not what I am doing with them but what someone years later will do with them... I thought I had gotten past that fear but your post brought it right back... Dang.. Now I feel like I need to smash them again! I know from the other post I had that some of you have unmarked fake collections.. I need to go back and read it again and to see how it is justified. I am torn again.
couldn't you just punch them with 'Copy' or something like that? Maybe use a buzzer-engraver thing in a field on the back?
I agree. I would keep them and just stamp them or engrave copy onto the coin. I also have a collection of copy's and fakes but I keep them for educational reasons. Sometimes I pass them around at the local coin club so people can know what to look for.
I would just keep them like you have in an album marked counterfeit. You can always leave the collection to the ANA. My local dealer once told me all he collects are counterfeits. Plus I do know there are other collectors of counterfeit coins.
Just do what the eBay sellers do and photoshop the word "copy" onto the photos of them and you'll be ok.
I wouldn't stamp anything onto them (copy or replica) and I would just keep them just like you're going to do. BTW, I see fakes being sold all the time on ebay, it's not a big secret that there are quite a few collectors of non-stamped counterfeits who have various reasons for collecting them and they are openly sold as fakes on ebay. That said, you do not see many fake Morgans listed, on occasion you will see them being sold but not too often as openly fake. Of course they gotta look really good, and a buck each was a steal of a deal!!
It was after a Previous post on some fake Trade Dollars I picked up.. Well Almost got burned on.. Almost.. I went on Ebay and found a guy out of China.. Free Shipping.. And I bought them a different times.. so It had to Cost him money at a Buck each.. I was guessing he was just building up feedback selling fakes cheap then he would make a load of cash burning a few buyers.. I bought a few.. then left feedback about FAKES!! WELL MADE UNMARKED FAKES BEWARE!.... Also he was reported and was kicked off ebay so the feedback didn't matter.. If you look at some of the Previous post re: fakes.. You will find a post with some pictures of some of these Coin Mills in China.. its scary.. Buckets and Buckets and Shops filled with fakes.. The more of these we can get off the street the better.. Teach others.. I hate to see anyone get ripped off.. This is a noble "Hobby" (Obsession).. we are but caretakers for a short time of these items.. then they go on into history.. I don't worry about me.. Its what others will do with them.
Once they are marked they are legal as long as the punched word complies to the legal requirements of size and style. There are size, depth, and font requirements in the law.
A question just crossed my mind on the subject of counterfeit Trade Dollars. Has anyone seen known fakes with chop marks? That is to say, I've seen a ton of fakes on eBay, as everyone else has, but I don't recall ever seeing one with chops stamped on it. It seems if they REALLY wanted to give the appearance of being genuine, this would be an easy thing to do since most TD's that went to the east were marked. Ideas?
I have a couple Trade Dollar Fakes too. Made in the 1920's.. They are clearly fakes, They have no marks but I would think with so many out there for such a long time somebody would have marked some... Somewhere.. We ALL need to look in our collection.. remove any from the Market we can. There are some great post re: Fake PCGS and other TPG Slabs from China.. Always look twice.
have a small punch marked copy made and punch it into each coin. They are still counterfeits you collected and you can study or do whatever but you have made them "safe" so to say.
Yes, I have seen fake trade dollars with chopmarks. In some cases the chopmarks were on the coin the copies were made from and in others they put fake chops on the fake coins.
