On an impulse, and out of a desire to grab some silver coins for the bullion value, I bid on a recent live auction through an auction house. It was a lot of over 100 Mercury, Roosevelt, and Barber dimes, all circulated and I paid a bit under melt value for them. They arrived today and I got lucky... a 1921 in solid G condition. It's a duplicate for me, so if/when I sell it, it should cover over half of what I paid for the lot. There were 2 1916s in there too, but no 1916-Ds. I also filled a couple of holes in my Barber dime collection, including a decent looking F-12ish 1899. Anyone else ever get lucky like that?
Yes, I recently had picked up some rolls of "unsearched" wheaties at a local coin dealer. And found a 1936 DDO-2 a bit worn but easily recognisable in a loupe. A few months ago from the same dealer I found a 1946-S S over D in about EF. It's nice to find these occasional red book varieties as I dobt that many "unsearched" cents exist anymore as almost all of the key dates have been long removed from circulation. And with variety and error interest growing it won't be too long before these begin to become scarce to unobtainable out there in the wild too.
I've also been able to buy quite a few mercury and roosevelt dimes for melt or less, but I have yet to find anything of real value. Congratulations on your find!
