I received an email from a fellow WINS (World Internet Numismatic Society) member this morning that was truly a joy to receive. It contained the following links to 950-1000 year old coins in MS condition, and gorgeously toned ! Those on the forum who are also WINS members have undoubtedly seen them already, but I thought it worth sharing here. http://www.coinraritiesonline.com/?page=search&task=det_item&item_id=4083 http://www.coinraritiesonline.com/?page=search&task=det_item&item_id=4092
Nice British early medieval. I have seen that toning a lot in ancients. Its when silver coins are fresh cleaned and then put into older manila envelopes for a decade or two, (or more). I have some in old Mystic Stamp envelopes with the same toning.
That MS65 one is amazing. And if you wait another 10 years, think of the profit you could make on Ebay.
While I am not into toned coins, the designs and grades of these two pieces are amazing indeed. Nice comment too, about the portrait of Aethelred "which must have thoroughly delighted him", hehe. Christian
Really?? Because there is a mint state registry set for these coins?? I think that a grade point or two is irrelevant with these pieces. Just the fact they are that old, and mint state, with lustre, speaks volumes to me. You are looking at 1000 year old coins, struck as the die maker intended them to be... If you are going to crack'em, then it would be for pleasure (to hold them, like collectors of ancients love to do) and for research purposes...
You're nuts. These are for my top-pop set. The price jump from MS 65 to... oh I can't do it anymore. This is all sarcasm.
I love them. I sure hope they're not AT, then I wouldn't love them. I wonder what the toning experts say.
