These are a couple of the 150 or so world coins that were given to me from some colleagues from Belgium.

I need them ALL, :D I am willing to share doubles though. My son scored some nice British coins. My world collection was pretty much restricted to western Europe modern coins from the 80's. It now includes coins from central Europe, Asia, Africa, and australia. I have 8 of the different euros from 1 to 5 and then a few of higher denominations. Some of the coins are from Magyar (the 1994 50 Forint is nice), Ceska Republic and a bunch from Italy. I was given a real lesson in coins from Belgium along with a book on Belgium coins. Did you know that coins from Belgium come in three varieties? One for French, one for Flemish and then one for either. I had been to Belgium four or five times and didn't know this until Thursday.

Learning is so much fun!!! :smile

As far as keeping them (for the common circulated coins) I'm putting them into 2x2s, then plastic sleeves, then a binder. As the collection grows I will need to sort them in a similar way as the Krause books is organized (country/age/denomination). This is still work in progress.

As far as cataloging them first I am sorting them, then I will put them into excel, then as I have time I will create a MS Access DB and port what I have from excel into it. It takes a lot of time so this is not going as fast as I would like. If the coins are organized it will make the documentation easier.

My more valuable coins are generally kept in a safer place with more protection for the coin (like the original box). I need to get some hard plastic holders (Air Tight) like you get from the mint for those that are not in holders already. Just a matter of ordering them.

    Best Regards,

    Darryl

Belgium did that in the years of the franc/frank. They used to have coins with either French or Dutch inscriptions, and the bilingual ones usually came in two varieties: Dutch-French and French-Dutch. Nowadays words, and thus language issues, are avoided on the circulation coins. The collector coins have the country name in the three languages - French, Dutch, German - and the order of the three varies from issue to issue.

The Belgian contribution to next month's Treaty of Rome commem will makes heavy use of Latin: PACTVM ROMANVM QVINQVAGENARIVM above, and the trilingual Belgique - België - Belgien below ...

    Thanks Christian,

It's going to be neat to go through my older coins (pre Euro) from Belgium and sort them by variety.

Only so much as I don't misidentify one of my ships (I mean coins) in my growing fleet :D

Soon I'll be able to talk on the US Navy - of about 150 years ago... I can hear it now - the German/English/Dutch/Irish/ American Indian Fortunato's are coming, the German/English/Dutch/Irish/American Indian Fortunato's are coming. :D Funny enough - no Italian in me. That would be enough to make anyone run...:smile

    Thanks Aidan

Steve,so you are a real fiery type of guy.The Welsh are known to be pretty fiery people, but not as fierce as the Scots though.I can guess that you are teaching your kids about how passionate your interest in numismatics is & giving them history & geography lessons along the way.

Unfortunately,I haven't got children, but I do have some nephews & nieces (nearly all of whom I have never met).

Indulging in numismatics relieves a little bit of stress in these very uncertain times, considering that some of my friends from church always like to be shown my newest acquisitions. To me,numismatics is a very addictive thing, but it is a very good thing.I occasionally enjoy a drink, but I put quite a bit of money into my coins & banknotes.

I would like to say to the smokers here, give up smoking & go & put your money into buying coins & banknotes!

    Aidan.
