Something fishy?

    Hello all,

I've been looking through the colonia coins on ebay tonight, and I came across this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Old-Coin-1788-M...goryZ528QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Does this look like a forgery to anyone else? Maybe it's the fact that the seller has 2 feedback and that there's no bids on it that makes me think so. I would love to land a nice Massachusettes indian cent or half cent, but there looks to be something fishy about this one.

    Anyone else think so?

    Thanks!

Looks like an electrotype replica to me, I maybe wrong, but it is a cool coin and a novelty thats probably worth the money !!! Seller looks like he's in the dark as well on it's value and origin

I agree with Arizona Jack. Most likely a replica. But still a replica worth three bucks!

I'd say its almost certainly a replica too. I can't find pictures of any with that style lettering.

The first is the ebay pic. The second is what all the authentic ones seem to look like.

Can't knock the seller as he really does appear clueless but honest about.

What you see is what you get. If you want a replica then this is probably your coin.
If not buy one that is slabbed for a lot more money.

If you don't want it, I'll buy it as a novelty for $3.00. It would be a nice surprise if it turned out to be real.

Since you found it, I'll wait and see if you bid. If not, I will.

I'm guessing the coin is a copy... obviously not real, but I wouldn't go far as to say it's a forgery (by that I mean, I don't think it was ever intended to pass as genuine).

I remember living in Pennsylvania all kinds of gift shops would sell copies of Colonial coins and tokens. Still have one of them. Wouldn't pass as real on close examination but look close enough if you want a cheap novelty.

Thanks for the input all. I don't have any interest in one that's a replica. I'm holding out for the real thing :)

Looks like a crude die-struck counterfeit, but I am anything but an expert so that's just a guess on my part...Mike
