Has anyone ever had an unknown person or persons (try to) follow you home or back to your hotel after a Coin Club meeting or Numismatic event?

i havent. gawd! that would freak my wife out if i told her that! would prolly freak me out as well. I live in a mostly safe area, so i am not all that worried. If i do start to get the hairs on the back of myneck standing up, i might just go to the meetings 'packing' let them freaks follow me home then !!!

No. Usually the look on my wife's face after I spend money on coins scares away any potential threats.

    WELLLlll...

Crazy thing happened on the way home from a meeting the other night...

Just got back from talking to a member of the County's Sheriff Department up in Wall. Not long ago, after our coin clubs monthly meeting in town the other night I was followed home by an unknown (person/persons). I managed to give them the slip on some side turn-offs but at one point I was going 80MPG on a snow-covered gravel road and they were still behind me. I'd turned off my lights and pulled down behind a stock dam & watched the car shoot bye with a .22 rifle in my hands... Got a pretty good description as well.

I have an idea of who it was but talked to a deputy (update) I knew this morning at B-fast and they're glad I reported it. That has never happened to me EVER.

I have bad habit sometime after I buy a few things including coin tubes at a show and do not want to carry it around so I take them out to the car.( I always to it with care and act like I'm leaving. Also I see many people selling stuff from there cars and then go back in the show not smart

    That's an odd question

With the way that I drive it would be obvious if someone was following me! The only time it happens is when they have light bars mounted to the roof. A nick name I've gone by is "Mad Max". I have a perfect record - I have crashed (except for one that blew up on the highway at 70mph - managed to get that off the road without hitting anything) and gotten a ticket in every car I've ever owned. Good Luck following me and it not being noticeable! You have to be a little crazy to go on a sub - I qualified :) Your best bet when riding in a car with me is don't let me turn on music - something about songs like crazy-train that just wants to make me go faster. Okay confession is over, bet that's more than you hoped for :)!

Amazingly, the Sheriff's Dept. has an idea already of who it was and what their motives were as well. Apparently, it all boils down an old USPS contract employee, My (old mail delivery ladies) derelict son, Go Figure... :( Think I'll hang around the house for the next few days and have the wife (she knows nothing) go into town if need be...

    Not Exactly

The closest thing I've had to this experience happened to me last month (December). My father-in-law sold his coin collection due to health problems and sold me his coin safe. It's a monster and it took me awhile to get it off the truck and into the house.

About two weeks after I moved the safe someone tried to do a home invasion on my house. Our dog went nuts at about 2 a.m. one morning. He rarely barks, so we knew something was up. I did a quick look around and noticed the security lights were on in the back yard. The next morning we noticed a "trouble code" on our security panel and called the security company. The technician that responded said that the phone line for the security panel had been disconnected outside the house. We then did a more thorough check and found a missing screen and footprints in the flower bed outside our sunroom. They guy hasn't come back since then.

I'm guessing that someone saw me moving the safe and figured that we had some valuables worth protecting. He needed to do a home invasion to make sure someone was home to open the safe for him.

That's the great thing about big dogs - they tend to slow people down enough to at least react to the situation. Glad they didn't get in!!!

I suggest you look into getting a cellular backup for the phone link on your security system. We had that installed recently. There's a monthly charge, but it allows the system to call for help even if the phone line is cut.

    Big Dogs

We have four dogs, the smallest of which is a 60 lb Chow. It's nice to finally get something back for all the money we invest in dog food. The dog that scared the guy away is a 105 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback. He scares me when he starts his "serious" bark.

We have a chow as well and I've only seen her get mad once - It stopped my 250lb 6'3' friend dead in his tracks the night he returned me from my bachelor party. The dog recognized something was wrong with me and he probably had something to do with it - smart dog :smile.

  16. I have never had that happen to me. I usually don't attend shows. As a concealled weapon license holder and firearms instructor, I carry a handgun concealed within the boundaries of state/federal/local law, but unfortunatly many shows have anti gun policies, even for law enforcement.
I know alot of dealers and collectors carry , but I can't see how so many do not if the law within their jurisdiction allows for it. If I were a dealer and transporting thousands of dollars worth of coins, I would want to be armed. I know alot of them use armored car services, especially the larger dealers like Heritage, etc., but even as a collector, I would not feel comfortable going into a parking lot from a show unarmed, but it may be because I am so used to it.
For individuals who do this on a regular basis, I would strongly recommend being aware of your surrounding, your perimeter, and not to advertise to those who don't need to know that you collect coins and are going to a show, recipe for dissaster.

You may want to talk to the Postal Inspection Service if he has anything to do with the Postal Service
