Covering coins from 1600 to present in five massive volumes, the catalogs are invaluable to collectors of world coins. But how does one collect world coins? Even though a single country can be collected, as many people do, other people like to collect using other methods. In this article I will focus on a number of ways world coins can be collected. With hundreds of thousands of different issues created over the last few centuries and even more prior to that, collecting them all is impossible. But what then are some possibilities?
Just found a Somalia aluminum 5 shilling coin and a Canadian Loonie dollar in the Coinstart reject bin that are now part of my son's foreign coin collection. TC
I tend to buy world coins that catches my eye. There are no rules or prerequisites for collecting world coins. I like to get as many different countries as I can.
I do the same thing. I tend to like dutch coins, Israeli Coins, and Perth Coins, but not restricted to those. I'll tell you this, US coins get boring fast.
I buy coins as a sideline in a small but growing family biz. If I buy $100,000 in coins this year, I will be happy. The margin for us in coins is low. I see why a lot of honest coin dealers go belly up. We are in the exurbs of militaria. People bring us foreign coins all the time. Most of them are not worth anything. There are, however, quite a few British, Canadian and certainly Filipino silver coins in existence. The military and military affiliated are an excellent source for world coins.
