I have not been very active with my ancient coin collection lately, so I thought it was time to dust off some of the pictures I recently took and get your comments. The first one is a sestertius of Tiberius struck for Drusus. It shows a cross cornucopia topped by the heads of Drusus' young sons. My example has a rather worn obverse, but the reverse is well detailed. ex CNG. This is a lovely type coin, not really that scarce except in high grades. Sestertius, caduceus between two crossed cornucopias, each surmounted by bust of one of the twin sons of Drusus: Tiberius Gemellus and Germanicus, rev. drvsvs caesar ti avg f divi avg n pont tr pont tr pot ii, around sc (RIC.Tib42).
I always found that coin creepy with the heads and such. Nice coin though & good to see a new ancient post. Some of us are in a dry spell while others post more on other boards nowadays :/ Look forward to seeing others you have.
Now that you mention it, Mat - your are right, it is a bit creepy with heads sticking out of a horn. But then again, standards were different in Roman times. Some of the denarii of Domitian show him riding a horse and brandishing a spear tipped by a human head. I guess they thought such things were pretty normal back then.... Here is a more innocent scene - Hadrian on platform citizens in front.
Well speared men and such is normal even by today cause of movies but the cornucopia with heads isnt a norm for us, lol. Beautiful hadrian. For sure a type not often seen.
You mean Hadrian? Yes, its a better type AFAIK. Btw, you are right about the children in the cornucopia. They have always kind of creeped me out as well, but from the prespective that children are the abundance, they make sense.
Excellent coins. The image on the sestertius s a bit creepy but yeah a very nice coin still. I really like the denarius. A dry spell is an under statement for me lol, but hopefully it will end soon. Thanks for sharing your coins
One last one for tonight: An antoninian for Divus Antoninus Pius, struck under Trajanus Decius. T. Decius minted remembrance antoninians for many of his predecessors.
Trajan denarius - Columna Trajana. For those who don't know, the Columna Trajana in Trajan's Forum in Rome recounts the course of Trajans' war against the Dacians. The column was erected in a.D 114 and is 30 m high. This is my 2nd example of the type.
Thank you, Cazkaboom! Here is one which I searched for for a while: Clodius Albinus - The african Emperor. Albinus reigned only for a year or so before being defeated by Septimius Severus near Lyon in 197 a.D. Denarius with Roma Seated on reverse.
I love the Trajan's column piece. That is the one Trajan I would want, if I could only have one example.
