Hello all, Thought I'd share some of a few of my new favorites. I've been sorting through some coins that Collect89 was kind enough to send me. One of the things I really enjoy about collecting world coins is researching them, why and how countries decided to put what they do on their coins. The only problem with that is it takes me forever to sort and catalog. I thought I'd post up some of my favorites from this lot. Nothing really rare or valuable, just some of the one's I think are beautiful. Thanks for looking, N.E.V. 1974 South Africa 50 Cents 1967 French Polynesia 10 Francs 1936 British West Africa 1 Penny 1958 Italy 100 Lire 2001 Malaysia 50 Sen
Nice coins! Thanks for sharing. Always liked the 100 Lire, but I really like that 10 Francs...never seen one of those before.
Very cool, I especially like the West Africa one. I also always liked that design of the Italian one. The French Polynesia one has interesting letters, and a cool design. I still have a pile of Malaysian coins like that one from my last trips to Kuala Lumpur, my wife's family lives there. The government of Malaysia just recently stopped using the little bronze 1 sen, which has a drum on it, and now businesses round everything up or down, so I tried to find some of those to bring home, but only found a couple. The 50 sen (half Ringgit), like yours, has a decorated Malaysian Kite on the obverse, that's what that thing is..... and on the reverse above the denomination is a Hibiscus flower, the national flower of the country. Also, 'Bank Negara Malaysia' means ' National Bank of Malaysia' in bahasa Melayu. They are all beautiful coins, very nice, thanks for sharing mate.
Thanks rexesq, I also have one of the bronze 1 sen, it's a nice little coin. Thank you for the info on Malaysia, I'll add it to my coin journal, it's information like this that makes collecting world coins so enjoyable for me.
Malaysian coinage - Straits Settlements You are most welcome sir.... yes the Malaysia bronze 1 sen might become a bit collectible, since they are no longer in use.... I forget the last year they struck them, but that would be a good year to have an example of. I always liked the older Malaysian coins, the British Colonial silver coins of 'The Straits Settlements' which was formed in 1826 by combining the territories of Singapore, Penang and Malacca. In 1939 the name was changed to 'Malaya'. On Aug. 31, 1957 'Malaya' was granted full independence, and in 1963 became part of Malaysia. Straits Setttlements coins are quite popular with British Commonwealth coin collectors, they also tend to have fairly low mintages, and the design of the early Silver One Dollar coins is quite beautiful. Here are some photos from my collection of coins of The Straits Settlements: The first pictured is an silver 1891 10 cents of Queen Victoria. The second coin pictures is a little Silver 5 cents from 1935 of King George V, you can see some die cracks on the reverse, this is one of my favorite British Commonwealth coins. Third is a Straits Settlements 1921 silver Half Dollar of King George V.
'Malaya' and 'Malaya and British Borneo' First pic here is a damaged 1920 1 cent bronze square coin of the Straits Settlements. Second and third photos are of a coin from Malaya, dated 1941, the year before the Japanese invaded and occupied Malaya and Singapore, 75% silver 10 cents. 'Commissioners of Currency - Malaya' Fourth photo is of a coin of 'Malaya and British Borneo' 1961 K N (King's Norton, Birmingham) ----------------------------------------- Very fun coins to collect, and collecting any world coins is great for learning geography and most importantly history.
Just got this for my daughter Victoria's seventh birthday - I'll hold it until she's older but I know she'll like it.
Pretty neat the 1936 West African coin. I have one of the same year with King Eddie on it. Great to see other collectors stuff. :hail: https://picasaweb.google.com/Ripley...shEmpireCoins?locked=true#5539250539655809602 https://picasaweb.google.com/Ripley...shEmpireCoins?locked=true#5539250543216850066 https://picasaweb.google.com/Ripley...shEmpireCoins?locked=true#5450764837672386754 https://picasaweb.google.com/Ripley...shEmpireCoins?locked=true#5450764840696164930 https://picasaweb.google.com/Ripley...shEmpireCoins?locked=true#5441236365577518610 https://picasaweb.google.com/Ripley...shEmpireCoins?locked=true#5441236365358414066
Malacca cool gift for your daughter H8_modern, what a pretty name she has irina59: BEautiful coins! You seem to have quite a collection, a little bit of everything, similar to me. Those are some beautiful examples, I like themall alot. Moneyer, I love those keping coins of Malacca, what is the diameter of yours? check out mine.... it is from 1837, I got it for a couple dollars sveral years back, but I want to get some higher grade examples in the future for my collection. Note the detailed spurs on the inside of the rooster's legs right above his feet.... I always liked these types since I grew up raising chickens and roosters. I should be going back to Malaysia next month, and hope to spend some more time in Malacca than on my last trips. **The photo of the reverse of this coin is off-color due to my camera problems.
Ripley, I love you, we can do this all day and night along  should we just start this show in alphabetic order?
hey-hey, first of all , please in alphabetic order, but Hallelujah , very nice 15 Kreuzer of Empress Maria Theresa silver 15 kreuzer coin minted during the reign of Maria Theresa (1741-80), the Hapsburg Queen of Hungary, later to be crowned Holy Roman Empress. This particular kreuzer was minted only two years after Maria Theresa accession to the throne. Circling her image is the inscription: M : THERES: D · G : REG : H ·U· B ·O ·A ·A (Maria Theresa, by the Grace of God, Queen of Hungary, Bohemia, Archduchess of Austria). OK, I followed you in this time, so here Hungary
Hungary Irina59: That 1692 3 Kreuzer is beautiful, awesome coin, very nice. And I love the bust style of the second 1626 coin you post, the bust with the sceptre over the shoulder, very impressive. Just the other day at my local coin shop I bought a Salzburg 1685 15 Kreutzer, in fairly high grade. I have yet to take photos though. I will soon though. Ripley: Absolutely wonderful 1744 Hungarian Maria Theresia, I have been looking for a Hungarian 15 Kr JUST LIKE THAT one for quite some time, with that same bust, and that same reverse. I love it, beautiful example. I am impressed. Irina: Cool Hungarian coins, great condition on that 1849 6kr, and very cool dinar, I have wanted one of those for a while too. Bust most of all beautiful 1696 Hungary 15 Kr, fantastic bust! I have a 15 Kr of Hungary from 1678, with a slightly different style, on mine, the titles are written on scrolls to which you can see the partially rolled up ends of on each end, a style which I very much like. What mint is your 1696 15kr from? I notice a large 'C' on the reverse at 6 o'clock, as well as different letters where the K and B for kremintz are on mine.... also an added coat of arms.... Here it is, my favorite Hungarian coin, not as high of grade as yours, but I like the style, and the bust is good.... I wish the Madonna and child had better details.... but I still am quite fond of it.
rexesq I have no idea if are any records of Mintage exist , but I like a lot of design early coins, here
