This guy sure does have some nice toned coins.. How does one get so lucky.. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZgreattoningQQhtZ-1
A nice mix of AT and NT, but nonetheless, all of them are beautiful all the way! I really like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/1886-PCGS-MS63-..._Individual?hash=item53debf7b92#ht_5193wt_958 Temptations, temptations.... I like to see what he has to offer, as well as another seller, shawnee coins.
You realize that this guy consign coins!! People with awesome toning send the coins to him to sell. Edit: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=7&threadid=405169
Oh.. Nice, I was Jealous for a second.. Well I still wish such nice items would even pass through my hands.. Just for a minute... Please..
Anything is possible. When I first started in this hobby, I dreamed of owning Indian Quarter Eagles, just a crappy worn one would make my day. (I'll let you in on a little secret...my first one I bought was last Christmas, it was an AU55. I bought another, AU58. Sold both of those, and got a MS62....And I'm planning on selling that 62 later on in the year, to get a MS63 or 64) And when I first started out, I didn't think I could ever collect anything more than wheat cents. Believe me when I say, anything is possible! :thumb:
I have been thinking the same thing.. Maybe selling some of my High Graded Silver for my First Gold Coin.. I think It may be the time.. I did sell All my 2009D Lincoln Boxes.. 125.00 Face For 375.00... And Another set for 300.00 .. Got the Kids a Xbox360 for Xmas.. But.. I tell you.. It was hard not getting myself a small coin.. it was my plan then.. XMAS!! Bam!! $$$ Gone.. Oh well.. Happy Kids all year I hope...
Very nice of you The 360's are very nice, still don't have one myself. I have a PS3 and a Wii. I find myself buying more coins than video games though
Which ones do you think are AT? Greattoning is one of the premier toning dealers, and has some really great coins. I have yet to see an AT coin in his inventory - and I watch his auctions frequently. I have bought several coins from him, including my recently purchased 52S to complete my set. Yes, he does take consignments, which is where he gets alot of his stuff I believe, but I still don't see anything AT.
With my untrained eye, I see some that are questionable. One that stands out to me is the 1996 ASE, and the 1881-S is questionable. Once again, this is from an untrained eye, and mind, but I will say this. I highly doubt a premier toning dealer doesn't sell AT coins. Most coins are hard to tell if they are AT or NT, and nobody is perfect at saying if each and every coin they see with toning is either Artificial or Natural. With all the inventory he has, and the coins he has sold, you will find an AT coin, nothing wrong with that. Somebody bought it, and was happy, and I believe most if not all of his stuff is graded by a TPG, so it fits that TPG's definition of market acceptable, making people feel more comfortable buying them.
There have been more than a few people who thought some of his stuff was AT. As always, a debatable subject. That aside, you say you have purchased from him, seen any yet that in hand look like his pictures ?
I have bought from him but for the coins that I have bought they never look like his pictures. Example his picture What it really looks like in hand!!
http://cgi.ebay.com/1836-PCGS-PR64-...mQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item359e21ca67 I'd like to have an 1836 dollar in PF64 even if it is juiced-up and colored like a peacock.
Yep - that one sure is a beauty. I actually got to hold one of these gobrecht dollars once. Not as nice as this one and they only wanted 40k for it - but wow, these are sweet coins.
T$ - is this the 1881S you refer to: http://www.randicoins.com/component.../product/094afd3fb4e8457afca484c8c9b5e983.png There is no question in my mind that is NT - coin doctors cannot duplicate the pull-away toning you see around the stars. That is a 100% sure-fire proof it is real. The silver eagle is more questionable, but remember - pure silver tones differently. ASE's are known for toning in wild and crazy patterns like that naturally, and it is consistent with a natural pattern. I have bought three coins from him, and each coin has always been nicer in hand than his pictures. He seems to have a problem with graininess, most likely due to compression issues, but his colors are usually pretty accurate (within tolerance for differences in lighting). The top picture is his, the bottom picture is mine.
Another example, my recently purchased 52S - top picture is his, bottom picture is mine. It was quite nicer in hand than I was expecting from the pictures. Again though, learning to interpret a sellers images will give you a decent idea of what to expect in hand.
Fair enough. I do want to comment on the pictures though. The pictures that he used for the franklin are fantastic, and I would love to own a coin like that, and looking at your pics, the coin looks uglier. The toning appears duller in your photos, and that beautiful shade of red is really a dark brown. I don't think his photos accurately show coins, although I've never bought from him. I'll follow up on that opinion, once and if I do in fact, buy from him.
Some ppl may like his krapus phonus coinus but I think they sukish phonish colorish. Best to leave them coins alone. There used to be 1 or 2 coin doctors who used to post on this forum on occasion, where are they now? Nobody has to answer that. :vanish:
Honestly, the coin really does look more like his pictures. Much of this is due to my own shortcomings as a photographer. I get close enough for my satisfaction on most coins, but toned coins are tough!
