For my Henry VI Annulet issue type set (of England) i managed to pick up the halfpenny. London Mint. And i also managed to pick up this silver gros of Philip IV of France (1285-1314) minted at Tournais. Anyone know anything more about these coins? Are they categorised by class/type? Was £25 a good price? (Yes the reverse is 90 degrees off, the pointy bit of the 'castle' should be at the top).
Sylvester,25 Quid was a good price for the French coin.Isn't Tournai in Belgium? I know that there were a few English coins struck at Tournai around 1513 (reign of King Henry VIII (1509-47)).How much did you pay for the silver 1/2d.? Which reign of King Henry VI is it? First Reign (1422-61) or Second Reign (1470-71)? Aidan.
Tournai i'm not sure exactly where it is these days, but i think it's once of those places that switched hands alot back then. Kinda like Calais. The halfpenny cost £45 and is an annulet issue struck from 1422-27 and is going straight into my annulet issue type set. Talking of places switching hands i did see some Henry VI Calais mint issues. In fact i thing when i get the groat it'll probably be a Calais mint specimen because nicely struck London ones are hard to find, and if you do find them they're usually clipped or damaged in some way.
I once had an Edw III Calais Groat in VF+. Now I wish I still had it. One of many coins sold for children reasons.
Sylvester,I do have a Calais mint Groat (4d.).It is a very nice looking coin.45 Quid is a very good price for the 1/2d. Aidan
I've already got my eye on an aVF one at the coin shop! Excellent strike. (Dunno if to get it reserved or not yet). What kinda groat is yours?
