Wasn't gonna bother getting anymore ancients for the year but got Franks cheap list and picked up 3 but got two, other was mailed later. They won't win any beauty contests but for under $45, can't go wrong. An emperor I needed but never had a rush to have or even cared about. But was more than affordable, so I jumped on it. Nice coins for the price. I, too, am addicted to Frank Robinson's budget list. Those Otacilia sestertii circulated a long time and are typically pretty worn. Here's my example of your coin. It's not exactly museum quality. 14.33 gm; 27.7 mm
I tried to get 5 off that same list, but have two coming. I don't like buying site unseen any longer, but the prices were too good to pass up.
Very nice, like the patina. Same, only 1 I got and ended up sending back due to it being past even my tolerance but was a few years ago. The other that should be here soon is the Crispina Sestertius. I wanted the Hadrian tet listed but the "heavy red crust" turned me off, didn't want to chance another dud for my taste.
I picked up one coin from Frank's list, this provincial AE of Herennia Etruscilla from Viminacium in Upper Moesia. Hardly a gem coin, but not bad for $12.95:
Cool additions Mat!! I have a modest and still unphotographed denarius of Clodius Albinus but here's a old photo of O Severa slabbed:
Man, those are some pretty nasty scratches on good ol' Clodius Albinus!! ... but for the price, congrats on scoring a dude that I don't have!! Oh, and I really like your chick-coin (congrats on scoring another sweet lady) Ummm, I happen to have a pretty sweet sestertius example of that lady as well ... perhaps you've seen her strutting her hipponess around this site? Mat => I love both of your two new OP-scores ... I'm always glad to see you buying and posting coins!!
I have to say that is probably the worst coin I have ever seen sold with a provenance to a previous collection with the possible exception of my Gallienus which is ex John Quincy Adams and worth about half of the label that came with it.
Ex Baron Louis Chaurand Collection Naturally, it had to be another Gallienus . Mine is scarcer, but yours has a pedigree that beats mine by a mile. Nice pickups, @Mat. The Clodius is one I might have gone for myself, but I had already gotten one from Frank's last auction. Also, I was late in seeing the e-mail about the budget coins and suspect all the good ones had already been snapped up .
Guys, cool it with the free publicity for Frank Robinson! Soon, everyone will be bidding in his auctions, and I won't be able to compete anymore! (Just kidding- I am always happy to see good dealers praised here, I want them to stay in business and be prosperous.)
Cool finds Mat, Clodius is on a longer "to get" list of mine. Otacilia Severa AE As. Nice additions, Mat, and nice prices too! I have one or two coins from the JQ Adams collection as well. Some german state minors. By the looks of it he really did collect a wide variety of coins, including low grade and common type coins (which is what I got from him).
Lot 907 was a group of 17 antoniniani of Gordian III. I was unable to spot what I considered to be a likely lot but there was lot 626 which was a group described only as holed and damaged RR coins.
