Hope to get some good recommend learning material. I am trying to narrow my interest and expand my knowledge. My interest are becoming for world coins

    1. World Gold (a nice way to hold some gold) My current project is Sovereigns of George V in MS
    2. One coin from each issuing entity post-1648(Peace of Westpalia seems to be a good cut off ) Here I don't care much about what coin. I would think that for learning a good focus is on HRE/German states since the countless country/bishoprich /free cities/abbies/duchies makes the challenge I already have krause coin catalog back to 1601
    3. Large Coppers (US Large cent and up)

Polish_20220817_182251879.jpg Polish_20220817_182300765.jpg I collect coins of the German States. There are tons of options! I've been leaning towards getting as many different states, principalities, bishoprics etc. as I can. It'll be impossible to get them all I'm sure, but if you stick to the smaller denominations like pfennigs, it's fairly affordable. If you like larger silver coins you might consider thalers. Gold was issued too, but is way above my price range. Ma-shops is a great source for these coins, but since most of their sellers are in Europe, shipping costs are costly, so I try and buy several coins at once from the same dealer to help with that. Here's a recent purchase just for show!

If you’re interested in sovereigns, “The Gold Sovereign Series” by Michael Marsh is a great book. World coins more broadly will be in the Krause series, but those books are pretty much references that just list types, dates, mintages and values. They don’t give much background info.

There is a book, “Gold Coins of the World”, by Arthur Friedberg that’s been recommended to me, but I have yet to read it.

Most books on coins are basically little more than catalogs, and there are many, many of them. There's nothing wrong with catalogs as they give you all the basic information of date, mints, often mintage numbers but not always, and often any known varieties. And there's almost always pictures of each individual type. And if that's what one wants then the books are easily found.

Far less common and sometimes often downright to find are books that give you all that plus the background, the story, the history behind and of the coin. Those are the books I always sought after. Sometimes easier are books that only give you the story and history of the coin. For the sovereign, this would be an example -

There have been some more recent reprints to incorporate all British gold into one book - I can't remember who has done the update though (but I think Michael Marsh himself is dead).
