SOLVED: 1852 WINFIELD SCOTT PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN TOKEN

This was found in a coin book purchased at estate sale, but unlabeled.

Can make out "FIRST IN WAR FIRST IN PEACE" on bottom front, with wigged bust facing right.

Eagle facing left on back.

Doesn't stick to a magnet. Smooth sides. The book did contain coins as far back as 1832, if that helps.

Thought it was just a gas station token, but doesn't match any I've seen. Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't know what it is, but I can tell you it's not a coin. It's a token/medal. Also that style of eagle was popular around the late 1840s-1850s.

I can also make out "FIELDSCOT" above bust

 

Probably a Civil War Token. I'm taking a quick look, but there's so many of them ...

 

now I think it may be "WINFIELD SCOTT" a presidential candidate in 1880 for the Democratic party.

Bingo. They used the eagle on the reverse on many civil war tokens too.

Before you put it in a 2x2, take the pictures, they should be much clearer

 

I might be able to provide some additional info on this token (ID #, manufacturer, etc) as I have a reference book on pre-1900 presidential campaign tokens. I am in China for another week, but will try to remember looking this one up when I get back to the states.
