Constantine I A.D. 316- 317 18x21mm 3.4gm IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust. SOLI INVICTO COMITI; Sol rad., stg. L., raising r. hand, globe in l., chlamys across l. shoulder, captive to left wearing Phrygian cap. in ex. RS RIC VII Rome 52 The captive must be a reference to the 1st civil war between Constantine and Licinius
I LOVE that reverse as well!! Can anyone 'verify' the significance of the captive? The head-gear seems to suggest another 'enemy'
The captive must be a reference to the 1st civil war between Constantine and Licinius could i find on information
But why the "Phrygian cap" for a civil (Roman) enemy? Unless all captives are to be stylized as barbarians, and all barbarians are signified by such headgear.
Well, my comment was a suggestion trying to make sense of a very interesting reverse type. I'm not sure mine was a definitive answer. Lovely coin.
Are these rare with the captive on the reverse? I found one on Vcoins and am thinking of pulling the trigger.
