I was at one of my local flea markets this morning and saw this for a buck so figured why not. I know NOTHING about ancients. Was wondering what it is, is it genuine, and ball park price. Thank you. 100_5447.JPG 100_5459.JPG

Looks like Claudius II Gothicus to me. Worn, but worth the price, eh?

I agree, Claudius II. $1 purchase is fine too.

Looks like Spes on the reverse.

I am glad it seems real. I figured for a buck why not, add a single ancient to my collection.

Nice Claudius II Gothicus - I love bargains like this.

I don't know a lot about these, but it looks like there is a "I" or "II" to the left of Spes, which makes it from the Siscia mint, according to Wildwinds (RIC 191 - several varieties).

If you stop for a moment and ponder through fact that you can buy a genuine ancient Roman coin that bears the recognizable likeness of an emperor who ruled for just a couple of years and died almost 18 centuries ago, that when you hold in in your hand you are touching the same object once held by actual Romans, the very bonsai of which have long ago turned to dust...what other hobby can offer you that?

    And all for a dollar!

There are lots of cool ancients available for $20 or less. Why not hang out here and find out more about them?

I do randomly check this part of the forum, but the dark side scares me. ;) I like the learning of the history but it seems like there is so much to learn I am intimidated.
