Problem is... inside was just the invoice. The envelope had been slit and retaped (not very stealthily) on the right side (I tore open the left side) and the contents (worth ~$2,000) had been removed. Interesting to say the least. So it was insured for the full amount, and we'll see how enjoyable it is to file the claim and how that process works. USPS at it's finest. It's not so rare that I can't find another one, but sucks to be out the $$$ until the insurance pays (assuming it will). From excitement and anticipation... to... "you gotta be ****ting me" in 5 seconds. If I had to guess, I'd say it most likely happened where the seller sent it, eh? Hard to escape the, "Yeah I'd like $2K of insurance for this 4x7 inch envelope." Seems unlikely it would have happened later down the line, but I suppose one never knows.
Terrible. Anything could happen, but since the package was insured, it would be somewhat difficult for the postal service to do this, but not impossible. Good luck....
It could have happened anywhere. The $26.80 stamp and the big blue Insured Mail sticker are like giant beacons to someone who knows..."Man that is A LOT of insurance!!!"
Sorry about you loss... That sucks that someone would do that... Karma, They'll get theirs, sooner or later... I hate to ask, but what was it???
samjimmy: Didn't you notice the damage before opening the envelope? Nah, I wouldn't have either, but that is what they'll ask. Good luck with the USPS.
When dealing with items of that value..it is always better to use a box..taped with paper tape and registered. The Post Office ten stamps all edges with a date stamp so that if opened it will be easily noted. Whom ever sent it should be smarter than that!!! After all the mint even sends rolled quarters in a box! RickieB
I thought I was going to have to get the PO to give me Insureance money the other day....I mailed some coins and insured them for over $900....I took the coins and put them in rolls and then took a Flat Rate Envelope and put them inside that and rolled that envelope and put that inside another Flat Rate Envelope and send it---when the guy got it the outside envelope was busted....(he wasn't home only has wife) but the inside one was ok.... I hear getting the PO to pay up can be a pain in the neck.....I hope all goes well and you get your money. Speedy
Yeah, a box is probably better. At least there's more to it. Send that box via FedEx or UPS as they don't print the postage on it. I've heard they're not the most wonderful when it comes to paying on the insurance though. $1,000 bill... G00240415A The pictures show it really well, but I'm right handed and just grabbed the envelope with my left and and proceeded to tear it open with my right. I don't even think I noticed it was taped on one side until I started ripping it. Maybe I thought it seemed a bit odd just as I started to tear through it, but didn't *fully* put it together until I looked inside. That's what I'm afraid of.
To Samjimmy Samjimmy.... Another postal person building a collection with the ins. co. paying for it. In time he or she will be caught. Or has a coin a collecting friend or coin dealer fencing the coins. You'll be paid by the carrier or it's ins. co. It will be a while, but you'll get it. That's why I pay the dealer to have every purchase over $50 sent to me insured! Still, it's a shame...you finally find a coin that fills your needs or desires at a price you like and someone steals it. Someone betraying your trust and the carrier he's working for's trust. I hope they get him or her soon and they spend a few years in prison! Clinker
something like this has happen to me, I didnt get a dime. Ebay wouldnt hel,p me paypal wouldnt help me and the PO wouldnt help me. NO ONE would. I got porked for 500 that time. that was the last time i got ripped off like that. I made sure of it. Good luck the post office is a pain in the rare end. THey like to say ITS NOT ARE FAULT. while theres a gy in the back room digging around looking for high priced sticker. Or how about those wild mail men that keep like 30 years of other people mail for no reason. theres aother thing that makes no sence. Nothing is safe and no one can be trusted. If you ask me.
I'll tell you one thing, that would make me furious to recieve an envelope with nothing in it, when I would know that there was supposed to be. Especially when it concerns that amount of money spent. I would contact the postmaster general an file a formal complaint.
About 4 years ago I had an insured USPS package disappear. Inside was a raw $10 gold coin I bought off of eBay, valued somewhere around $350 if I remember correctly. I waited an appropriate amount of time before speaking to the guys at the post office. They were very helpful. One guy actually admitted that it was very possible that a postal service employee had stolen the package. He said shippers will make the mistake of putting a return address like "Bob's gold coins" on the envelope, practically inviting a thief to try his luck. Hope this works out for you.
You'll get paid, but it will take about 3 months Next time, insist on Registered Mail. It's really the only way to go.
Isn't it the practice of the post office to stamp mail that's apparently been tampered with or damaged upon receipt before they deliver it? I think it is. But that didn't happen, here, right? Hmmm... Might be some kind of clue, Sherlock. But I'd ask them about that, and whatever significance that might have. I'd also get the grading service's story nailed down. Be anticipating your proof problems, in other words. Good luck.
Was it insured? Just wondering what the circumstances were. I can easily see them saying that I opened it, removed the contents, then taped it up and filed the claim (which is entirely possible, I can understand). I'm also nt sure what you did to ensure it didn't happen again. I know they use contractors, etc., but who else stole it? If we assume the seller actually sent it (and didn't send it that way), then that leaves who between them and me? Yeah I figured *if* I get paid, it will be a while. ::sigh:: Can I ask what would "registered mail" have done? I know what it is, just not sure what difference it would have made? If I didn't mention it before, our mail is delivered through a slot and it goes into the house. It doesn't sit inbetween the door or in a mailbox on the street (at least that's not an issue). Well, I'd don't know if they always do it. I've gotten mail like that with the stamps (and it was mauled heh) but this was (badly) sealed. I don't think I noticed it even until I opened it and pulled out the paper (invoice) and then looked in for the note, seeing basically the third picture I posted.
Registered mail is supposed to be tightly monitored by the post office. I don't think it's allowed to mingle with regular lowly mail.
Lost ? Stolen The people who should know are the postal inspectors. They want to know if this is a pattern happening in a specific area. Fill out your paperwork but file a claim with them also. The postal system uses a couple of large air carries to carry the containers of mail which are sealed. It is probably as little as not replacing when inspected for what ever reason ? But more then likely a scheme to do just what has been accomplished. Stealing items from the mail is taken much more seriously then most realize. Good luck in your hunt.
I filed a acomplaint on the postal inspectors web site. Complaining makes me feel better heh. Ahhh I see. Well, they might want to add high insurance items as well. IMHO, if they let $2K items mingle with simple letters with little to no quality control, then they are negligent. I'd say they deserve it, but it's pathetic, and in one way or another, we're all paying for it. I guess I'm just glad it wasn't a priceless or one-of-a-kind item. It isn't easy to find one in the condition you want, for the price you want though. Pffft.
