I've noticed this a couple times CRH and paid no mind, but this is a smooth bevel that almost seems like the die had a super weak strike. Any thoughts? (I did get a laugh after I took the pictures and noticed the PMD "dropping." Class.)
First, the upset rim is formed before the coin enters the coining chamber. With this in mind, I believe that this is PMD. Chris
In this case PMD is Pre-Mint Damage? Sorry, I don't know what a coining chamber is, but I'm imagining it's where the planchet drops for the dies to strike?
You are correct about the coining chamber. And it is made to size for a planchet to fit into it, a blank will not fit into it well, and can cause strange coins to happen. Does the obverse have the same beveled edge on it? A photo will be helpful. At this point I think Chris got it correct with Post Mint Damage.
The obverse looks normal. Here's the obv and a couple better ones of the rev Edit- I thought it odd that PMD would be that smooth and consistent around the whole circumference so I figured I'd ask. I think it's neat either way. One for the cigar box.
True. I guess I often forget that people intentionally damage coins. I should read more about the minting process so I have a better grasp of the mechanics behind it.
