    Hi all,

It looks like I'm going to be going out to Washington DC for training this March, and I was hoping to be able to swing by the Smithsonian museum to view their coin collection. I'm wondering which museum the collection is in. I went to their web site but it wasn't obvious which museum I should go to. Can anyone fill me in on this?

Also, has anyone ever been to the Smithsonian to see this coin collection? I'd appreciate any stories you might have about it.

    Thanks!

You're right, in that the majority of the collection is not being shown. They do, however, have Legendary Coins & Currency, including a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, at the Smithsonian Castle.

I was there a few years ago. Let me tell you, it's one hell of a lot of valuable coins. When I was there, they had a big sign saying they had something like 40 coins with less than 10 examples known.

It was taken down this year....but as Super Dave says....some parts you can still see.

They just opened this exhibit Speedy - and they plan to expand it. It was in response to the many complaints they received from the numismatic community after they closed the main collection exhibit.

Ah.....I guess if I would have gotten CW I would have seen it....I sure do miss getting it...I guess that is a good excuse to start getting it again ;)

The Smithsonian asked numismatic experts from around the country to help dismantle the collection, examine and catalog the coins, etc. How would you like to have been part of THAT group? From what I hear, they were going nuts! Hey Fred, come and look at this one!!..LOL

They were going nuts alright - trying to figure out why the curators had ever allowed the staff to routinely clean all the coins with cloths :(

Which only goes to show you that if you polish your coins every day, you get new ones when the old ones wear out!
