I just bought my first box of dollar coins. Unfortunately, I can already see they are all small dollars. The ends show a few SBAs and many newer Dollar coins. Are any of the small Dollars worth keeping? I ordered them mainly to see if there would be any Eisenhowers.

Look for the 1979-P SBA Wide Rim (aka Near Date), FS-301; the 2000-P Sac "Speared Eagle" FS-901; the 2000-P Sac, Cheerios Dollar, FS-902; and any of the Prez Dollars missing the edge lettering (or partial edge lettering).

Proof issues can be found for the Presidents and Sac series every now and then as well.

There's a few lower mintage coins you might consider keeping to complete a set, or maybe worth a small premium in better condition - 1981 SBA, 2002-2008, 2012-date Sacagawea's, and post-2011 Presidential dollars.

Also look for experimental rinse dollars. Discolored presidential dollars are called multiple things by the different tpgs. Id keep them.

    Hello,

I've been keeping the "satin finish" ones that have come up.

Edit: are those the ones @SorenCoins calls "experimental rinse"? If not, what do the experimental rinse coins look like?

No. Satin Finishes are sandblasted by the mint and released in sets for collectors. The experimental rinses are quite more valuable, most were removed from mint bags by officials after seeing the rinse left an undesirable effect. But they have been found in 2000-P, 2000-D, and 2006-D. They show a darker, coppery, bronze color but still lustrous.

I don't buy boxes, but I do ask for dollar coins once a month or so... and then spend them. So far this year I've found 3 of the Presidents not being put into circulation and 2 proof President coins. People are spending the Presidential dollars because you have to buy the newest ones to finish the sets... so why bother? The mint took all the fun out of it.

I'm on a roll (literally)! I found two more near dates in the first 20 rolls of a new box. One roll produced a nice Millard Fillmore proof and one of the two 79-P near dates. I also plucked out a few NIFC's, a 80-S, and a 99-P. This makes me wonder how many coins I missed in my first box. I have a pretty good handle on SBAs and Sac Dollars. But, I feel like I'm missing presidential keepers. The Proof is the only presidential keeper I've recognized. I'm checking for missing lettering, etc. I guess this is a work in progress.

Now, I'm actually up to 9 near-date/wide-rim 1979-P SBAs, over a roll of 1999-P SBAs, and around a dozen 1980-S SBA's. I've also plucked out some proofs and a bunch of NIFC's!
